A Modern Problem

A friend of ours asked us a question today, and I didn't have an answer for her. So I was hoping someone here might know.

What are the rules on a cruise ship regarding smoking ( vaping actually ) medical marijuana ? I know you can't smoke in your cabin, so I assume no vaping because of the odors that may be left behind. But what about in permissible areas ? Do the ships care if a passenger buys marijuana in Jamaica and then proceed to smoke it on board ? Or is marijuana use illegal in the middle of the ocean ? Actually, I think it is, but I couldn't answer her question about the medical stuff.

Does anyone have any experience with this ?

Thanks

the part about buying in Jamaica does not apply to our friend. It was a general statement

Interesting questions. I would suggest that for medical marijuana they contact the cruise lines and speak to a representative there. That is a grey area but I am sure if they can provide sufficient documentation then arrangements should be able to be made. If it is medical marijuana though then quality and consistency would matter so I would think that it would have to be brought with them from the states and not picked up on shore.

Apparently, it also comes in pill & liquid form. So I guess she can use those.

Thanks for the help

As marijuana is still against US federal law, if the ship sails from the US it would be against their policy. I believe it is also against policy in other ports.

The best thing is for the user to call the cruise line that he or she is considering sailing on to find out their policy. Most, I would think would not permit this at the present time.

I don't believe it is allowed on ships.

Regardless of whatever laws come into effect or not. This is going to be a mess.

Of course, this is coming from an ex smoker, so I don't like the smell of cigarettes anymore anyway and I never have liked the smell of pot. However, someone is going to make a stink ( pun Intended ) about this.

I don’t know if it’s illegal in international waters, but I believe marijuana use is against policy on all major cruise lines. As for vaping, most companies apply the same rules as actual smoking. Of course it would be best to check with whatever cruise line they are considering.

No experience but I believe it's illegal.
