Review summary

If you are interested in the environment, climate issues, animal survival and incredible scenery this is a cruise for you. The ship is small, 1400+ so we could get into small bays and into the fjords with ease.....

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Painless! Especially valued after an overnight flight.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Food was great. Service was over the top, could not have wanted for anything!

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
This trip offered educational lectures on the Antartic and Patagonia, wonderful!

Entertainment

3 out of 5
This is not a real strong area for HAL, the entertainment is suited for an older crowd but there was a comedian who rocked it!

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The crew aboard the Zaandam are there to make your trip most enjoyable. They go above and beyond.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Older ship but treated with love by the crew, she is in great shape. Common areas were clean and well tended. Our cabin had new carpet and updates.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Cabin was clean and well maintained, balcony was lovely with two chairs and ottomans and a beverage table, room to get out and see the scenery. Bathroom was nice, spa tub and large shower head were lovely. We got a new tv while there as ours died and it was a nice, large flat screen, very nice update to the old tv! Now this cabin does get noise from the singer in the Ocean Bar, while she was performing she may as well have been standing in our cabin, we did not hear the instruments, just the vocalist, her mic speakers must have been in the ceiling. Fortunately she stopped performing at 11:30 p.m.

Ship tip

If you like the shows get to the showroom early, it fills fast.

Ports of call

Buenos Aires, Argentina

5 out of 5
Large city, lots to see. We were there overnight so we could venture in for the evening. Felt safe, large police/military presence.

Montevideo, Uruguay

5 out of 5
Did the Hop On Hop Off tour independent of the ship. It was nice and took you all over the city to see sights. $24 each and they take credit cards and American dollars.

Puerto Madryn, Argentina

5 out of 5

Port Stanley, Falkland Islands

5 out of 5
Loved it! Clean and well tended. People were friendly, felt like we were in Britain!

Antarctic Experience

5 out of 5
This experience is incredible. It is aboard ship, but you travel around a portion of the continent with guides who inform you about what you are seeing. An experience I will never forget.

Cruise Drake Passage & Cape Horn

5 out of 5
We made it around the Horn we did! Now we can eat dinner with a leg on the table and get a tattoo and a large gold hoop earring! Beautiful sights to see out there though. We had good weather and it was lovely.

Ushuaia, Tierra Del Fuego, Argentina

5 out of 5
Interesting g town at the “end of the world”. Lots of tourist shops and restaurants. Even a Hard Rock Cafe! And an Irish Pub!

Cruise Beagle Channel

5 out of 5
Cruising the channel was great. Such beautiful country to see.

Cruise Glacier Alley

5 out of 5
Those glaciers were incredible. Breathtaking!

Punta Arenas, Chile

4 out of 5
Small port, find an excursion.....wish we had done so.

Cruise Strait Of Magellan

5 out of 5
Again so interesting g to see this historical area. Those old sailing ships must have had an experience. We had great weather, I can imagine it during foul weather in a small wooden ship!

Cruise Canal Sarmiento

5 out of 5
Breathtaking!

Cruise Amalia Glacier

5 out of 5
What a beautiful area.

Cruise Chilean Fjords

5 out of 5
Waterfalls, I must have a thousand photos of waterfalls! Sent photos to family in Norway to compare the fjords, so majestic to see.

Puerto Chacabuco, Chile

3 out of 5
Do a tour, get a taxi, but the walk to the market is doable, just figure out your best route.

Castro, Isla Chiloe, Chile

4 out of 5
Small area, very pretty.

Puerto Montt, Chile

4 out of 5
That volcano in the backdrop is massive, so pretty.

San Antonio, Chile

4 out of 5
Just a harbor town, did not explore, boarded busses to Santiago.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
HAL makes it easy!
