Zaandam

7 Night Alaskan Explorer (Seattle Roundtrip)

Sail date: August 25, 2006

Ship: Zaandam

Cabin type: Oceanview

Traveled as: Couple

Reviewed: 14 years ago

Review summary

The ship was small enough to give a comfort level and large enough to spread the people about without any feeling of crowding. One still had the pleasure of sailing, not encased in a cavernous mall. The vessel was always immaculate with pleasing works of varied art throughout the ship.

Ports of call

Sitka, Alaska

5 out of 5
The "sea otter quest" was a worthwhile experience for people who enjoy wildlife viewing. The Sitka Historical Park was also a worthwhile and inexpensive site for those interested in the local culture.

Juneau, Alaska

5 out of 5
The Mendenhall Glacier was THE sight to see in Juneau. Local transport makes it convenient and inexpensive.
Don't Miss: Mendenhall Glacier

Victoria, British Columbia

5 out of 5
Butchart Gardens was the only real choice for the time alloted in Victoria but a terrific site for flower lovers, even at night.

Ketchikan, Alaska

5 out of 5
Misty Fjords boat and floatplane combo tour was excellent for viewing spectacular scenery and some wildlife and for a different perspective from the air. Its drawback was that it is very expensive.

Pros: The wraparound deck and bow viewing of scenery

Cons: the glass partition on the top deck in the bow
