As always, I enjoyed my cruise on Holland America. For mature adults it's a great cruise line. The Westerdam is a nice size and not too difficult to get around. The daily events are interesting, some educational, and some just fun. Shane, the cruise director, was a lot of fun. The entertainment is average, however, Deborah the steel pan player, and The BB King Allstar Band were exceptional. The Adagio classical duo were also excellent. Our balcony room had a good size balcony and there was enough storage space in the cabin, although the room was not as large as Carnival's.

Our balcony room had a good size balcony and there was enough storage space in the cabin, although the room was not as large as Carnival's. (The balcony was larger than Carnival's) Although we usually are on the higher floors, I liked being on the Upper Promenade Deck closer to the water. Because the balcony had a solid front instead of a glass front, it made the balcony more cozy.
Ship tip
Read the floor layouts near the elevator and along the walls. Super helpful in getting around. Be sure to spend time in the Crow's Nest. It is a great meeting place, wonderful views, a good library with super comfortable chairs. It also has a coffee bar with free treats.
Great beach port. No need to go outside the port. Beach is beautiful, good snorkeling, free beach chairs. There is also a free pool with free beach chairs.
We love to just walk around Old San Juan. To the left of the ship, you can walk around the path to El Moro fort. Great walk and wonderful views. The cobbled streets and plazas makes one feel they are in Spain. Lots of restaurants and shops.
Go to Water Island for a great beach experience. At Crown Bay you can catch a $10 round trip ferry next to Tickles Restaurant. You can get a free ride to Honeymoon Beach, or walk up the hill. They will provide free beach chairs and umbrellas. Just order something from their bar, but there isno pressure. You can also rent kayaks, floats, and other sea equipment if you choose. People are very friendly.
We enjoy walking along the beach or along the paved paths. Shore excursions are a bit pricey, but you can have fun without them. We walked to the Stingray Experience and enjoyed seeing the stingrays in the water and the interactions with the guests. Theyhave small signs all along the road about the Bahamas which is very interesting. The beach is beautiful and they have free beach chairs, and hammocks further down on the beach. Be sure to swim in designated area as further down on the beach the water is rough and there are no life guards.
