Review summary
The Westerdam is an older, smaller ship and therefore does not have all the perks the newer, larger ships have. Overall our cruise was very enjoyable. Our cabin, while a little smaller than on the newer ships, was nice. We had a balcony cabin and really enjoyed having coffee on the balcony most mornings.
The meals both in the main dining room and in the buffet were just okay. The buffet food was often cold so we ate in the dining room as much as possible. No lobster tail - what's up with that?
Our wait staff was not the best we have had and had to continually ask for coffee. Often times we did not receive our coffee until dessert was served even though we ask for it when we were seated.
The entertainment was very good and we did enjoy that. Superbowl Sunday they did not have entertainment or much going on because they used the theater for the football game. We were upset because we are not football fans and there was not much else to do!!
The casino was too smokey, I thought most ships were non-smoking except for designated areas.

I have been told by servers that they have a set way of serving such as hot coffee is served at the end of the meal. However it is annoying if you want your coffee or even your salad at a different time, that they can't accommodate you.
HAL is still my favorite cruise line, though. I especially enjoy the service that I receive by the staff. I also enjoy the variety of food choices on the MDR menus. i rarely ever go to the buffet for dinner unless I have to do so. Last year, I took two cruises with HAL and will take a long one next year. We will be 4 star Mariners on our next cruise & I will look forward to complimentary laundry. Thanks for posting your interesting review. I hope that you will join in our discussions on the Forum. We would enjoy your comments. I especially enjoyed this review since I have not cruised on this ship.
As a non-smoker, I understand your complaint about the smoking on ships. HAL is the most lenient for allowing smoking on balconies. I hope that they, too, change this policy and enforce it by acting on complaints from other passengers about violators. We need to keep bringing it to their attention.
