Review summary

I would say that the captain, his crew, and staff really made this a fun cruise. The ship is a bit older, and some of the things RC has in place (paying for room service and many food items), but the shows and interaction with the captain were unlike anything I've ever experienced.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
We departed on time. Of course the muster drill is somewhat annoying, but a necessary evil.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
The main dining room had some excellent meals, and some that weren't all that great. The maitre de was great to always try to seat us in the same area with the same waiter and assistant, and we really enjoyed them. The waiter was great about bringing us some special dishes when we weren't expecting it. We ate in the Italian restaurant, and loved the Tiramisu and all of the other dishes. We also ate at Chops, which was delicious. The cheesy tater tot things were TO DIE FOR!!!! We did however feel that the options for snacks or small meals inbetween meals, if we ate a late breakfast and missed lunch, were quite lacking. It felt like a lot of nickel and diming as far as food was concerned.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
We didn't participate in many. Visited the "spa" area and found it to be lacking compared to other ships.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
The performances that involved the captain and crew were fantastic, especially when Captain Merrick sang Bon Jove!!! The acts that they brought from outside were fantastic. I laughed so hard my stomach hurt from the comedian! The band Rookie was also fantastic!! Great entertainment! The shows by the RC dancers were just okay.

Children's Programs

Did not bring children

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Every staff member we encountered was amazing. Our room steward made awesome towel animals, and after I asked where I could find ice on day one, he brought me an ice bucket with ice and filled it every morning thereafter. Very attentive. The maitre de spent extra time to try and seat us with the same waiter in the same area every evening. We never had trouble with seating in the restaurants.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
This is an older ship and seemed like it could use a little bit of updating and cleaning. Some areas felt a little cramped.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
At first it felt small, but we got used to the size. We did enjoy the area behind the headboard where we could store extras and the two nightstands. What we did not like is that there was only one outlet in the entire room. Next time, I would bring an extension cord to bring the outlet closer to the bed for phone charging. The bed was a bit hard, and the pillows seemed cheap and old.

Ship tip

Bring an extension cord for the bedroom.

Ports of call

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico Did not visit port

Ship did not make port due to an emergency on board.

Cozumel, Mexico

We have been to Cozumel before, and because my husband had a cold, he wasn't able to Scuba Dive, so we just walked in to town and shopped.

Progreso (Merida), Mexico

We did an excursion through the ship and went snorkeling in Cenotes. It was kind of cool, but the snorkeling was kind of a waste. Had a great Mayan lunch though.

Disembarkation

We were delayed.
