Review summary

Wonderful cruise experience on Viking Star (beautiful ship, nicely appointed cabins, professional staff, good food and drink) but disappointing that we missed two ports (Sicily and especially Algiers -- how many other opportunities will anyone have to go there?).

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Embarkation was quite easy -- short lines, prompt, friendly, helpful service

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Good selection of good food in World Cafe, excellent food in The Restaurant, outstanding Italian in Manfredi's. Only disappointment was Chef Table speciality restaurant, which served a set menu of odd dishes and paired drinks. By the way, the beverage package is the way to go.

Onboard Activities

2 out of 5
Viking Star is not a big ship, and has limited options on "at sea" days. Lectures focused on history rather than contemporary concerns (e.g., for Tunisia, would have preferred hearing about how Arab Spring started and where it is going rather than who occupied the land over the centuries). We missed two ports, and ship did little to provide for additional activities for unexpected "days at sea."

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Excellent magician, but lame Las Vegas inspired musical shows.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Polite, helpful, friendly, but unobtrusive room stewards and waitstaff. Front desk staff professional and helpful.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Beautifully appointed and maintained ship.

Cabin / Stateroom

Ports of call

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

4 out of 5
Drove through selected areas of Rome, then spent free time at Vatican (blessed by Pope!). Would have been nice to have a little more time to walk over to Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps.

La Goulette (Tunis & Carthage), Tunisia

5 out of 5
Fascinating daylong tour of Tunis and Carthage. Highly recommend Bardo Museum.

Cagliari, Sardinia

3 out of 5
Picturesque little city. Poorly organized tour.

Valencia, Spain

5 out of 5
Gorgeous city, good tour, plenty of time to explore.

Barcelona, Spain

5 out of 5
Must-see city. Glad we stayed an extra couple of days to tour the city and see the amazing Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, and other sites.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Easy, efficient.
