Review summary

Tgis was our first Viking Oceran Cruise. We have been on 3 River cruises and Viking has aleays cancelled IF they could not provide the top-notch cruise exoerience they are know for. This Viking Jupiter cruise should have been cancelled. It definitely wss NOT worth the money when the top cruise ports were cancelled and the half of the trours we went on were fair/poor. I wish we had cancelled our selves, but with only 3 days notice, we were all packed and had gone through the horiible process to get the Chilean documentation. We also paid for business class for a trip that was very disappointing. The crew did do what they could to try to make on board activities "interesting" but our Viking cruise experince was well below what we expected from Viking,

Embarkation

1 out of 5
Last minute changes & inaccurancies to covid requirements made for a stressful beginning

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Top notch and wonderful selection in the restaurants and the main Cafe, and other areas.

Onboard Activities

2 out of 5
Sort of ran out of things to do. Last minute itinerary changes resulted in 10 days at sea. I used the gym (which was great), attended lectires and did nature journaling, and read books. The crew tried to add activities such as Top Chef Competions, Build a boat, Guest & crew talent show, and read books, which were fun, but the money paid were for the original itinerary, not for being isolated to the ship . Very disappointed.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
The entertainment was great. Kate and was by far the best Cruise Director I have experienced. The Viking dancer/singers were excellent , as were all the other guest entertainers. Impressed with the talent that the crew and officers had, especially the GM. However, beacuse of the 10 days at sea, performers had repeat appearances.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
With only 123 guests, vs the 950 expected and 450 crew, we were pampered.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Crew did an amazing job cleaning every inch of the ship. No one had Covidduring the trip.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Impressed with the storage in the bathroom and other areas of the ship. A portion of the desk opens up to provide a lighted mirror/vanity to put on make-up. Size was great, and the bed comfortable. Towels not soft, rather rough.

Ship tip

Don't do this cruise unless it is the oringinal itinerary and bring extra hangers (I use the ones you get when you by clothes in stores)

Ports of call

Valparaiso (Santiago), Chile

1 out of 5
Valparaiso is a trashy city with graffiti all over the place. We Did 2 tours. The first was the included tour, Panoramic Valparisio & Vino Del Mar. This was just plain awful, a waste of time. The guide did not even stop at the last place. The 2nd Tour was "On the Trail of Pablo Neruda" who was a poet I have never heard of. His home on the coast was very interesting, and then we visited his home in the city. Still, not up to the quality of the tours we have experienced on our 3 prior Viking River Cruises.

Puerto Montt, Chile

3 out of 5
This was our favorite tour. The Volcano was impressive and I climbed up to the base. This takes about 1 hour and is very hard, so don't try it unless you are in good shape. The Falls were great and you could get awesome pics of the Falls with the volcano in the background. Enjoyed the lunch at a vineyard restaurant. Beautiful scenery, and great wine and food. Worth the price.

Cruise Chilean Fjords

4 out of 5
Beatiful scenery but spent double the time looking at them because of itinary changes.

Cruise Amalia Glacier

3 out of 5
Breathtaking but we saw so mahy glaciers

Punta Arenas, Chile

2 out of 5
We did 2 excursiions here. The Magdelena Island & Penguin reserve by Catamaran. Lived being on the island and seeing the penguins up close, but tythe majority of the time was travelling by catamaran, and it was rocking and rolling alot (bring you sea bands or seasick pills). We also did Punta Arenas & Magellan's discovery. While seeing the Victoria shop was interesting, this tour would be better suited for grade school participants. Not at all woth the money. The "location" while on the ocean is surrounded by trashy buildings.

Ushuaia, Tierra Del Fuego, Argentina Did not visit port

Viking cancelled this stop 3 days before departure due to Covid restictions in that country

Cruise Cape Horn

2 out of 5
The day was very overcast, (not really exciting or anything to look at) but the crew did a nice ceremony remembering all the sailors who died at sea, especially those who tried to round the horn.

Port Stanley, Falkland Islands Did not visit port

Viking cancelled this stop in December due to Covid restrictions

Puerto Madryn, Argentina Did not visit port

Viking cancelled this stop 3 days before departure due to covid restrictions in that country

Montevideo, Uruguay Did not visit port

Viking cancelled this stop 3 days prior to departure due to covid restrictions in that country

Buenos Aires, Argentina Did not visit port

Viking cancelled this stop 3 days prior to departure due to covid restictions in that country

Disembarkation

Very organized. But we had to be off the ship at 8am . Even taking a tour of Santiago we had to wait in a conference room in the Marriot for iver 6 hours before being taken to the airport. They did a great job with the luggage
