Ship: Symphony of the Seas

Traveled as: Family (older children)

Review summary

All in all it was a great cruise that our family made many memories on. We loved the big ship and never really felt like we were onboard with 6500 of our closest friends.

Embarkation

Super quick embarkation experience in the new beautiful royal Caribbean port. Friendly staff with many many lines and they have iPads now to make it all so easy to board. Very technological advanced.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

I’m not sure why 150 Central Park is not on the list of venues to review but it should be. We bought the specialty dining 3 night package and chose wonderland, 150 Central Park, and hooked. We loved 150 so much we cancelled hooked and rebooked 150 it was so amazing. From the food to the service to their selection of wine we can not recommend you booking this specialty anymore! You will not be disappointed.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
There was always something going on whether we were at sea, in port, or super late into the night. We loved it!! We spent almost every night at On Air for lots of game shows and amazing karaoke. It was the highlight of our trip. Make sure to see Harold for your drinks he’s awesome! The sports pool had daily volleyball which was fun for all kids and adults. They also had the staples sexiest man alive contest and belly flop. We never felt bored on the ship. In fact we had to take a rest day one day just to relax from all the fun we were having.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Entertainment was top notch. All the game shows, karaoke, and the million dollar shows were phenomenal. All shows are 50 minutes outside of hairspray which was an hour and a half. We felt like this was a little too long for us and it’s hard to keep interest for that long as well. We loved all the shows though and highly recommend booking as soon as they come out!

Children's Programs

Our daughter is 12 1/2 so this was her first year in the living room/fuel teen club. As such she didn’t really love it. She ended up going to a few of the parties but just know this is a come and go as you please club. No checking in and no checking out. They post activities of the day but if no kids show up they don’t do them. My daughter was somewhat disappointed in that aspect. Most of the kids ended up wandering the ship together or picking a meeting place.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The service and staff were all top notch on the boat of course! Hannah was an amazing activities manager, she always hyped up the crowd. Harold in the On Air bar was an amazing bartender and remembered us and our drink order every night. We also enjoyed the rising tide bar and thought they had the most amazing drinks. We wished we would have visited earlier in the cruise. Ferry was our stateroom attendant and never once did we have to ask for anything. He kept our room clean no less than two times a day and was always so friendly when we saw him.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Beautiful ocean view balcony cabin with a pull out couch. We felt like we had plenty of room for the three of us. We heard from many people who had boardwalk balconies that it was very noisy for them to sleep. We never felt this way in our ocean view balcony and loved having a late night snack or drink on the balcony most nights.

Ship tip

Book early for the shows and don’t book two shows in one night. Make sure to factor in some rest days as if you go go go 7 nights you will be so exhausted at the end.

Ports of call

Labadee (Cruise Line Private Island)

Absolutely gorgeous island. Be aware that you will need all the sunscreen here, it is so incredibly hot on this island. We also thought with this being Royal’s private island we wouldn’t have to pay for chairs or umbrellas, we were wrong. The locals demanded money for simply allowing us to sit in beach chairs. We get it, they live here and need to make a living but we thought it was a bit ridiculous to have to buy chairs and umbrellas again. Other than that the bar service was amazing, the water was clear and beautiful, it was a great day.

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

3 out of 5
Beautiful beautiful island but be aware this is more so like Jamaica on the Dutch side where people are constantly coming up to you the minute you get off the ferry boat for rentals. Then when you rent chairs and umbrellas on the beach vendors are constantly coming up to your chairs trying to get you to pay for goods or services. That was a little much for us so next time we will book a more private excursion.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

5 out of 5
We loved San Juan! It was a beautiful and historical island with plenty of shopping and sights to see. We loved walking around and exploring on our own to Umbrella Alley and the Fort.

Disembarkation

Fastest I have ever disembarked from a cruise ship. The facial recognition is gold and allows you to quickly move through customs. It’s amazing.
