Review summary

Symphony of the Seas is a first class ship with eye boggling decor and an unusually large number of activities. I’ve traveled on Oasis of the Seas and other Oasis class ships, but never felt as crowded as I did on this trip. It was typical to wait in line to eat casual meals in the Windjammer, Mexican Restaurant and the solarium Bistro. The length of the lines and the amount of time waiting was much longer than I’ve experienced on any other ships. This compares to no lines on HAL or Princess. I was never able to use the hot tub without 28 other folks. The capacity is 29. Unless you like playing cards inside in the card room, it was difficult to impossible to find a space anywhere on the outside decks. The cabin size (10583) was great with the best storage space and bathroom ever. However, this high was diminished by the lack of complimentary amenities. We got 2 small bars of soap for the entire cruise. It proved impossible to keep the small slivers of soap off the shower floor. There was no bath gel or body lotion and since I was accustomed to having these items on other ships I didn’t bring any with me. There are tons of lounges around the pool deck areas, but not enough comfortable non-lounging chairs. This trip makes me reconsider the pros vs the cons of traveling on a big ship with 6,200 people vs traveling with 3 to 4,000. Might not sound like a big difference, but trust me it is. If you go in for bigger better blitz and have children who want all the bells and whistles of their over the top water/entertainment activities then Symphony of the Seas is the ship for you.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
The quality and variety of the food was good. However, in the any time dining room on deck 4 it was always very hectic. The wait staff was very friendly, but seemed overwhelmed at times.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
There is no shortage of on board activities. Good variety for all ages. The theatrical shows were excellent; however since we cruise often, we had seen them on board previously. Comedians and Ice Show were excellent.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Excellent talent and staging.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Our room steward and dining room waiters were very attentive.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
The ship is so large that it’s takes a few days to become oriented. The decor is spectacular and a delight to the senses. Our room was well laid out with lots of storage. It was difficult to maintain a cool temperature after about midnight. There appears to be a controller on the thermostat that overrides any temperature you set it. With the luxurious down comforter it’s a shame that you can’t be comfortable under the covers throughout the entire night.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The size of the cabin was great with plenty of storage. However, the mirror and lighting at the dressing table were not great. Lighting too low and mirror, while attractive was not functional. For such a big luxurious ship it’s surprising that RC is so cheap with their amenities. We received 2 small bars of soap for the entire cruise. No body gel or body lotion. I’m accustomed to always having these products provided on Holland America, Princess and Viking so I did not bring these items with me. Cabin was clean and well maintained and the bathroom was a nice size.

Ship tip

Be prepared for crowds everywhere. Know that as a general rule you will have to wait in lines to eat at the Windjammer and the Solarium Bistro. Be ready to always have 29 strangers join you in the hot tub. The hot tubs look like packed sardines pretty much all the time. There was no shortage of deck lounges, but not enough comfortable chairs in the outside pool and solarium areas. Unless you are happy playing cards inside in the card room be prepared to have difficulty finding a table and place to play. We were asked to leave the tables at the outside Mexican restaurant because understandably they needed them for people eating.

Ports of call

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

We rented a boat and went snorkeling. So much of the island has not recovered from the hurricane.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Not a great choice for a stop. Too far to get to a beach and visiting the little shopping area at the pier is like visiting your neighborhood at home.

Labadee (Cruise Line Private Island)

Great island. Great beach and good transportation getting you to the far side of island. Lots of beach activities. Food is good for beach setting, but lines open for too short a time .

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Best and fastest disembarkation ever! We were walk offs and I was extremely pleased at how the RC staff managed the line and prevented late comers from cutting in. Also extremely pleased that RC staff communicated with those in line about the time we would be let off the ship.
