Review summary

Our first cruise experience was a disappointment. The Star Princess folks spent more time nickle-and-diming their guests than attending to their needs. The buffet, available throughout the day, was mediocre, the anytime "elegant" dining served up tiny portions. The Princess website identified  great hamburger, pizza and ice cream shops, they turned out to be outside counters and not indoor locations. Traveling in Alaska is not the ideal time to stand at an outdoor counter waiting for a hamburger, that when provided, is already cold. The entertainment was not first-rate, it was ok if you had never seen a Broadway show or other more professional entertainment. Other than the Steward for our deck section, the staff was, at best, indifferent to the guests. During the upper deck mid ship departure celebration from Vancouver, with large crowds participating, I tripped over a lounge chair that was sitting in the middle of a crowd of celebrants (should have been secured before the celebration began). Bruised and bleeding, I went back to our stateroom where our Steward provided plastic bags containing ice to help with the wound. We went to the Medical Center and found it closed with a sign clearly stating that they would only deal with "medical emergencies" after hours. Not sure what to do, I called the Service Desk, explained that I was injured and asked for some direction as to what to do, the young lady at the Service Desk said that the Medical Center would reopen on Sunday at noon. She did not inquire as to the nature of my injury nor offer any other assistance. This was, for the most part, the type of "customer service" provided to guests throughout the cruise. Once on land at the Danali Resort and in the Westmark in Fairbanks, we had an opportunity to speak with other travelers who were on our cruise, they too felt that the Star Princess could have done a better job. Those who had taken other cruises said that we should not judge all cruises by the Star Princess experience. If you are thinking about a cruise, avoid the Princess and parent line Holland America.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

1 out of 5
No matter where you ate, the food was not the best nor very inviting. You'd expect a cruise to provide "top level" cuisine, not Golden Corral.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Most activities were designed for guests to purchase something, an item or a service. There were some interesting non-business related activities.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Not Broadway, not off-Broadway, not off-off Broadway, in fact, not as good as local Community Theater.

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
Other than our Steward, the cruise staff was indifferent and not helpful.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
The ship was clean, the bed was so soft and uncomfortable they had to add bed boards to improve our comfort.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Cabin was larger than expected with a great balcony and acceptable, but small, bathroom. Everything in the stateroom worked except for the need of a bed board to improve bed comfort.

Ship tip

Stay away from Princess and/or their parent line Holland America, the "Walmart"' of cruise lines.

Ports of call

Vancouver (Canada Place), British Columbia

2 out of 5
Our Vancouver hotel was in a Vancouver suburb called Richmond. It took nearly a hour to get to the terminal from the suburb. Would strongly recommend a hotel in the city.

Ketchikan, Alaska

3 out of 5
It rained, it always rains (260 days a year) in Ketchikan. The Salmon and rain headquarters of the region, Ketchikan's Walking Tour was informational and interesting.

Juneau, Alaska

3 out of 5
Make sure you go whale watching and visit the Mendenhal Glacier.

Skagway, Alaska

3 out of 5
Take the train to the top of the mountain and make sure you take a carriage tour of Skagway.

Too bad you had such a horrible experience. We sailed on the Star Princess on July 29th. We had a marvelous experience. We went on the Alaska cruise for the scenery not the food. It was the best vacation we have ever had. Great crew, excursions and lots of great memories.

first cruise is a huge learning curve. there are strategies such as buying packages in advance of your cruise so you don't feel nickeled and dimed, knowing you can order 2 entrees if that's where your appetite is at, etc. the more you cruise, the more you learn and avoid those issues.

Princess & Holland America ( along with others) are owned by Carnival.

Why didn't you ask for seconds on the tiny portions?

Your view and experiences are just as valid as a more positive one. Star princess has to gather all the reviews. . . analyze them and weight the differences. Thank you for such a thorough and honest review.

Cruise lines have all gotten greedy. We have been cruising 30 years and I don't ever remember it being this bad. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. They got you and they know it!
