Amazing Experience by robadiaz

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Scarlet Lady / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Upon booking we were excited for the different experience that we were about to encounter. From check-in to check-out everything was PERFECT!! VV totally exceeded our expectations. So much fun, the vibe was great plus the food and drinks were amazing. Everyone we met was so friendly and easily struck up adult conversations. Not have kids running around was a definite plus. It's a cruising experience will will definitely do again and one that everyone should try.

Totally amazing, would definitely recommend! by kzbaach

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Scarlet Lady / Destination: Caribbean - Bahamas

As a point of reference, my group consisted of three women in our 60s. We found everyone to be welcoming and friendly, the food excellent and the shows interesting. We also liked all of the restaurants, casino, pool and public areas, as they were a good size, not gargantuan, like many ships. After a day or two it was easy to navigate the ship.

Choose carefully! by Sandara3

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Scarlet Lady / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

We’ve done both cruises that Virgin offer out of Miami and we do not plan on coming back. The entertainment is lacking “for us” and unless you spend tons of money and upgrade to a larger room the Sea Terrace bathroom is ridiculously tiny!

Virgin No More! by Cruiser60747674

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Scarlet Lady / Destination: Caribbean - Western

From the moment that we parked the car at the terminal, we knew the cruise was going to be phenomenal. Embarkation was smooth and rapid. Our cabin perfect and despite what some people said, had plenty of storage space. Our first meal confirmed that we were going to have great food for the next five nights. I should say great food is really not strong enough -- fantastic, some of the best you ever had food. The crew was happy, helpful, and ready to go the extra mile. Our only complaint, the voyage ended and we had to return to normal life. We've already booked our next Virgin Voyage.

Key West and Bimini Island by Marcel0655

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Scarlet Lady

Boarding and getting off the ship was simple and quick. There is no cruise director. There are no announcements. We didn't use any of the specialty restaurants. The Galley food was good but I prefer a buffet. There was a nice smoking lounge at the back of the casino. I didn't use the pool or hot tub but I didn't hear anyone complain either. We didn't attend any shows. The ports were beautiful.

A different way to cruise! by alost1033

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Scarlet Lady

A very relaxing, different way to travel! The no kids was so nice. The ship is beautiful with lots of photo opportunities. It is choppy so it can take some getting used to, and to find where things are but there is plenty of signage. The food is phenomenal and the service was above and beyond.

Excitement turned into disappointment, due to unfortunate events beyond control... by needmore1337

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Scarlet Lady / Destination: Caribbean - Western

I was very excited to be on my first cruise, and solo at that. I came across Virgin Voyages from ads for the promo for the November Eat & Drink Month on Facebook/Instagram, so I thought why not try something new...travel-edition? I always had concerns about hurricanes, which is probably the second reason why I normally wouldn't pick a cruise for travel, sea-sickness being the top reason why I normally wouldn't do a cruise. But I know many people who cruise and never had an issue with weather affecting their cruises, so I was thinking what are the chances for me? Maybe thinking that way was the beginning of jinxing this cruise. In the end, I suppose cruises are not for me since I am not very flexible and don't deal with spontaneous things all that well. I had made very specific plans based on the original ports because I started all my research into what I wanted to do and see each day the moment I paid in full, and felt lost with the new ports because of the weather situation. A part of me wants to try cruising again (but definitely not during hurricane season, lesson learned), and the other part of me doesn't... However, should one day I find the inspiration to try cruising again, I would most likely pick VV again. Not really sure what was being filmed during the cruise, but something was being professionally done, so certain areas were inaccessible while whatever was being filmed was taking place. I would say sailors and crew respected each other. A variety of demographics, so I don't think many people had strong opinions on either end of the spectrum that would've cause some heated "Karen"-like moments, but if they did, everyone I've seen kept it to themselves. So I don't think people have to worry about themselves fitting in or not. Also, not exactly sure if the excursions that VV offer are composed of only other VV sailors or mixed bag of VV sailors and other people from other ships, but at the end of the excursion the operators ask for tips and when I booked it said gratuities are included. I did feel bad not leaving them anything, but the whole reason why I went thru VV was because it said the gratuities are already included.

If you’re looking for an elevated and unique cruise experience without encountering a bunch of rugrats running around without supervision, then this is the cruise for you! You can fully be yourself on this cruise and meet some of the most amazing people. I’ve been with NCL for almost 10 years and after this cruise, I’m switching over to virgin. I already booked my next cruise before this sailing ended!

A Fun Cruise, but... by ccarbone22

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Scarlet Lady

tl;dr: We had a great time. This won’t replace Celebrity as our go-to cruise for a relaxing vacation (this cruise was far from relaxing), but we’ll definitely cruise with Virgin again. Great concept, but the execution needs work. The good: Our room was spectacular. It was spacious; well-appointed with plenty of storage, a large bathroom, and a nice bar; and unlike any other ship I’ve been on, WELL AIR-CONDITIONED. If you know me, you know how important that last point is. Food quality was excellent and most meals impressed us (with the exception of Test Kitchen). The variety of restaurants available to try was a welcome change from our usual Celebrity ship which only has two or three specialty restaurants to choose from. The concept of The Galley was great, but the execution needs work (more on that later). The pizza, which was mostly always available, was shockingly good in the context of being on a cruise ship. The Korean BBQ (Gambae) was a fun evening with a reasonable representation of the food we’re used to at these types of restaurants. I also very much appreciated that there was minimal single-use anything on board. No disposable plates, forks, knives, cups, etc. No plastic water bottles anywhere. Even the grab-and-go food containers were reusable. Entertainment on the ship was better than we’ve seen, and we participated and attended more events in these nine days than in our past twenty-something cruises combined. While not for everyone, we mostly enjoyed what we saw. NSA was a lot of fun, the pajama and Scarlet Night parties were well-attended and enjoyable, and Duel Reality was fun to watch (even if the dialogue was a bit unnecessary and strained). The “secret” magic show our group attended was excellent and the tricks performed were impressive. Unlike other cruise lines, cruise staff were encouraged and allowed to mingle with passengers. This created a relaxed environment and added more to the experience than I had expected. The lack of a cruise director was a bonus; instead we had several “happenings” which were various people on staff assigned different duties and personas to direct cruise activities. This obviously worked well given the level of participation we saw and the quality of the programming. The ship décor was mostly beautiful (a subjective opinion), although much of it was trendy and I wonder how it’ll stand the test of time. The different areas were themed and decorated accordingly, with The Dock and The Wake being especially pretty. The nightclub was an excellent venue for all different types of activities. The private karaoke rooms were a fun (if sometimes deafening) addition. The crowds on the two different cruises varied widely. We were, for once, in the middle of the age range. We’re used to being among the younger people on ship despite not exactly being young. We also enjoyed the diversity; it was a much more non-white crowd than usual. Service overall was excellent at the restaurants. The bars were a different story, which I’ll get to, and not necessarily the employees fault. The wristbands which replaced the typical sea pass card were a nice addition. It was always right there on your wrist and easy to use to get on and off the ship, open your room, and charge your drinks. The “meh:” The itineraries were boring. Bimini beach club was a nice break for the day. Key West is Key West (not my favorite place in the world), and Puerto Plata was a work in progress. I know Virgin will have more varied itineraries in the future, which I look forward to experiencing. Signage throughout the ship was pretty lacking and unless you memorized the layout, finding things could be a struggle, even after several days on board. The stairwells and stateroom hallways were a bit sterile (again, subjective). Good luck finding a public bathroom. They were few and far between and often hidden. And the optical illusion bathrooms were a bit much. You needed to look closely to see if where you were about to walk was a mirror or the hallway to the toilets in several of the bathrooms. EVERYONE we talked to had the same issue with the optical illusion bathrooms to the point of it being comical. The pool was pretty small for a ship of this capacity. Shaded areas were sparse, and the windows at the edges of the pool decks did not open, creating stuffy spaces with no airflow. On the upside the pool was refreshingly cool and aside from the buck-wild Vegas-style pool party moments, was usually pretty accessible and not overly crowded. And back to the bathrooms: the entire pool area had exactly two unisex toilets where lines often formed. Sometimes going back to the room was just quicker. The ship REALLY needs more bathrooms by the pool. Richard’s Rooftop, the suites-only area, was decent. It had two hot tubs, a bar, and plenty of seating. Again, though, shade was hard to come by. With more shade and perhaps a small cool plunge pool, the space would be excellent. Suites get “rockstar agents” who are basically your concierge for the voyage. We all had different agents from sailing to sailing. Our first agent was nonexistent and pretty useless. He clearly didn’t want to be where he was. One cabin in our group was on the other side of the ship and had different agents than the rest of us, and they lucked out. Both of their agents were excellent and ended up taking care of our entire group. So the lesson here is that your experience is TOTALLY dependent upon your agent, so good luck and may the odds be ever in your favor. The bad: The app, the app, the app. In fact, the ship’s entire IT system was god-awful. It greatly hindered a lot of the experience. While I had minimal expectations for the wi-fi (which were met), others in our group had issues with wi-fi working consistently. Then there’s the app itself. It was clunky, hard to navigate, crashed frequently, and often had incorrect or duplicate information. The app was universally hated by guests and employees, so much so that its awfulness was a punchline in several shows. There was no quick-view to see what food or activities were available at the moment, no map of the ship, and no way to message other guests in your party. All of this is pretty baffling given that the company had the opportunity to build an entire system from the ground up using current technology. Continuing the technology theme, whatever system employees were using to place drink and food orders is equally as awful as the app. Ordering a simple vodka soda could take up to a minute or two for the server to work their way through the clunky system. And this had to be repeated for each drink. This led to long wait times at bars, especially when they were busier. Same for the restaurants. This cruise is NOT for a larger group. Getting reservations at a restaurant for 8-12 people was a challenge and often impossible. The other spaces in the ship simply can't accommodate a group of more than 6. Getting reservations for dinner at all was challenging, even for a group of 4. The ship doesn’t seemingly have the capacity to accommodate all guests in the restaurants for dinner. Which brings me to food availability: if you don’t get a reservation and end up in The Galley for dinner, good luck. Half the places were not open for dinner and the food variety was overall lacking during the dinner hour. This was pretty disappointing given the otherwise good quality of food. Finally, getting a suite doesn’t get you much beyond the room and Rooftop access. On other cruise lines suites get priority for dining reservations, events, and excursions. Not the case here. It is what it is, so just keep that in mind should you choose to book a suite. All in all, the good far outweighed the bad. The things that were the biggest disappointments are easily fixable, so I’m hopeful Virgin will straighten things out for an overall excellent experience the next time we cruise. The concept works well, the execution needs improvement.

Great time on Scarlet Lady by GypsyJohn

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Scarlet Lady

I would enjoy doing this cruise again. I'm sure we will do it again at some point. For me the only draw back is the distance to Miami when we live a few minutes from Port Canaveral and the terminal I find more convenient. No kids is a nice change from what we normally experience.

Definitely a different type of cruise. Not sure we would do it again because of the poor music and the overly flamboyant LGBT sailors and entertainment crew.

Virgin was near perfect by smove1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Scarlet Lady / Destination: Caribbean - Bahamas

Okay so if you aren't interested in cruising you can scroll past this one. Let me start by saying that the Virgin cruise was excellent, superb, and worth it. Now that being said, it was not the most technological ship (RCL Symphony of the Seas) or the most esthetically pleasing ship (Celebrity Edge) but it gave me a new type of cruising experience. To get the most out of the cruise you need to download their app. Meaning you need to download the app to do about 85% of the things on the ship. All the info and communication from the ship is sent thru the app. The biggest difference between Virgin and the other cruise lines is they don't have buffet style dining where you serve yourself. You go sit down and someone comes over and takes your order and brings the food to you. Oh yeah, free soda and juice all day long. For dinner you have to make a reservation in one of their restaurants. I was able to try 4 out of their 5 restaurants. If you are interested in the restaurants I can give you more details. The food was by far the best I have ever had on a cruise. Every day I tried foods and flavors I have never experienced and it was all delicious. The presentation of the food rivals any Michelin starred restaurant. Let me talk about the crew for a minute. Everyone I encountered was friendly and generally happy. And not in the way like "it's my job to smile and greet you" kind of way. The workers I talked to told me that Virgin treats them better than other cruise lines they worked for and make more money. Lots of the staff have tattoos that they are encouraged to show off and not cover up. I give Virgin kudos for their treatment of their staff. FYI, there are gender neutral bathrooms all over the ship. The ship has entertainment every day, everywhere, just check the app. Some of the shows you have to make a reservation to attend. The have a huge "Red" party on the top deck which is rowdy and wet. They have private karaoke rooms to reserve and social spaces to chill, meet people and drink. There is space everywhere on the ship to just lounge, everywhere! The criticisms I have are few but they don't take away from the overall experience, such as the TV. They only have like 6 live TV stations and those were news channels (BBC, FOX, MSNBC, CNN). Oh they had ESPN but that's not entertainment. They had a catalog of movies which I'll describe as the hits from the past decade. There was an important college game on over the weekend and because ESPN didn't show it, I couldn't watch it. Well, I guess I could have paid $40 for the internet package and watched it from my phone. I opted for the free internet which had limited download speeds. I got a balcony cabin which was much smaller than I had experienced before on other cruise lines. The bathroom was just as small (think airplane bathroom with a shower). The room itself lacked extra shelves and storage space for your things. And because I had a balcony it came with a hammock that was for sitting. Yes you can sit and stare at the ocean or read a book. Overall, I would have to say that Virgin did it's job by providing a new cruise experience. My favorite cruise line is still Celebrity but I will definitely sail Virgin again.
