Review summary

NOT A GOOD EXPERIENCE except for the size of our cabin and 2 staff members!!

Embarkation

5 out of 5
The embarkation went very smoothly - probably the best we have ever had.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
The food at the Horizon Cafe (buffet room) was generally better quality than in the dining rooms! We were astounded by the fact the the Hot Chocolate was free in the dining rooms BUT you had to pay for it in the Horizon Cafe. We also felt there should be more Purell Dispensers in the Horizon Cafe and throughout the ship. We would have to return to the entry area of the buffet line after we used the serving utensils to re-apply the Purell. We did notice only once on the cruise that the staff changed out the serving utensils.

Botticelli Dining Room

2 out of 5

Not only was the maitre d' at Michelangelo Dining Room rude (on several occasions) but we were told if we wanted a window table to call and reserve one. When we called we were told "since we wanted to eat early, there was no need to reserve the table". When we got to the dining room, we were told that no tables were available. The first night, 2 tables sat empty the entire hour we were there; the second night, someone did sit at the table a little after an hour after we had arrived. The food was often mediocre and very small in portions. An example of this was when we ordered the filet mignon. When it arrived there was a skewer with only 4 bites of filet and 3 bites of sweet potato!

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Steve Moris was fantastic. The other shows in the theater did not live up to our expectations. We have been on 5 other cruises (never on Princess before) and the entertainment in the theaters were great every night. We did, however, enjoy the evening entertainment in some of the bars. The most annoying was the multiple talks by the acupuncturist.

The Library

2 out of 5

The library was very small and wasn't really conducive to leisurely enjoying a good book. We also would have enjoyed a game room to play cards or board games.

Service and Staff

2 out of 5
Our cabin steward was beyond exemplary! Jessie went above and beyond to make our cruise comfortable. There was also one waiter in the Caribe Cafe (Peter) who also went above and beyond to be friendly and helpful! MOST times however we were treated with rudeness or apathy. The supervisors and the maitre d' in particular never seemed to smile and were just rude!

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
All in all the design and the cleanliness were good. As in all cruise ships, it takes getting used to where things are but by the end of the cruise we had it down!

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The best part of the cruise was in our cabin! It was much larger than inside cabins we have had on other cruises (2 other cruise lines). Jessie kept the cabin clean and neat! And always had a smile on his face and would greet us by name whenever he saw us!

Ship tip

In talking to other people on the cruise (often those who have cruised Princess before), we all felt less than thrilled with this cruise. The staff and the entertainment and the food could all use improvement. I normally would give a second chance on a hotel, restaurant or cruise...just don't know if I will give Princess and second chance!

Ports of call

San Pedro (Los Angeles), California

3 out of 5
Stayed with friends for a couple of days and had a good time. Santa Anita Race Track is awesome!

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

4 out of 5
You get off the ship and are greeted by a mall, a Walmart, and a Sam's Club. So much for leaving the U.S.

Mazatlan, Mexico

3 out of 5
We only went to the shopping area near the pier. OK but the same as any Caribbean or Mexican port.

Disembarkation

2 out of 5
We waited and waited in the wheelchair assisted area (about 40 minutes after our designated time) to be called. We were told it was because our bags weren't off the ship yet but when we finally got to our bags, they were the only 2 bags left in that area. Luckily we had about 45 minutes left once we checked in at LAX to make it to our gate.
