I have a Holland America Line history that goes back 72 years. Although not the same as my first transatlantic crossing in 1951, "It's still Good to Be On a Wellrun Ship".
Embarkation
4 out of 5
Embarkation went very quickly. Our time was 1:20, so we missed the Mariner luncheon at noon.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
4 out of 5
The service in the main dining room was not up to our expectation of HAL standards. Perhaps due to new crew after Covid. We ate in both Rudi's and Tamarind. My lobster tail in Rudi's was so big that I couldn't finish it. Service and food in both were excellent.
Onboard Activities

Entertainment
4 out of 5
The entertainment was pretty much average cruise ship quality
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
The service, especially our room stewards, was excellent and friendly.
Ship Quality
5 out of 5
The Rotterdam is beautiful. All areas were well-maintained and clean.
Cabin / Stateroom
5 out of 5
We had a balcony cabin. Our steward had it cleaned each morning when we returned from breakfast. The balcony was large, with foot rests for the chairs He also kept the windows cleaned.
Ship tip
Holland America Line is still an outstanding product. We are seniors, so we like the fact that they don't have the rock-climbing walls, water slides and such.
We did not do an excursion. We did, however, have lunch at the Southernmost House. Their specialty is lobster pizza. Absolutely the best pizza we've ever had!
I sailed with my parents and one sister on HAL SS Statendam in 1963 crossing from NY to Southampton. I thought that was early until I read your 1951 sailing. That experience and an earlier one on Cunard created a lifetime of loving “ocean liners”
Appreciate your detailed review. Glad you have found a cruise line that fits your needs (still). Would truly enjoy the stories you have of cruising from the 50’s through today.
