Review summary

The bottom line on HAL’s Rotterdam? It’s hard to argue with a classic. It’s got the basics—pleasing décor, comfortable cabins, decent food, pools, spa, casino, entertainment, shops. No, you can’t ride a carousel. But it delivered a relaxing, rejuvenating vacation.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Quick and smooth. About 15-20 minutes. Interestingly, HAL used facial recognition during the embarkation process.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The ship was handsome and the food was decent. The specialty restaurants we ate in (Pinnacle Grill and Canaletto) were very good. The buffet was varied, and standouts were the "Distant Lands" foods, such as Beef Sumatra and Port Vindaloo.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
We didn't do much other than relax, but there was enough to do, with lectures, ping pong, pools, casino, spa, etc.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
We enjoyed the BBC presentations, which were nature films shown in the World Stage with its almost-surround screens and soundtrack by the ship's classical quartet. We also liked the Music Walk with its myriad music venues and genre options.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Amazing service! Our room stewards were second to none; they kept us well stocked, with elaborate towel animals many nights. The staff throughout the ship were helpful and friendly.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
It was easy to navigate and very handsome, with muted colors and quirky artwork--much of it with a music theme.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The size of the cabin was typical, but it had some neat bells and whistles, such as exceedingly deep drawers under the bed, mounted and flexible reading lights by the bed and plenty of outlets and USB ports.

Ship tip

Know the demographics (older) and that the ship lacks the glitz and high octane activities of Royal Caribbean or NCL. Its a ship that delivers a traditional cruising experience--relaxing.

Ports of call

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

5 out of 5
One of the best--if not the best--port for cruisers. Has it all--nice beach, ton of shopping, a lot of look at, lively waterfront. Cheapest souvenirs anywhere.

Castries, St. Lucia

Kingstown, St. Vincent

We couldn't get the excursion we wanted, so we walked into town. It doesn't offer much for the visitor, as it is rather poor. I was told the island was beautiful, so this is a port that really needs an excursion.

Fort-De-France, Martinique

5 out of 5
I loved it because it was a blend of French culture and Caribbean vibe.

Daylight Cruise Past Mount Pelee

Basseterre, St. Kitts

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

4 out of 5
Note that town is a long walk from either port--Havensight or Crown Bay. It's doable, but only by folks used to a trek. Havensight is about a mile from the ships.

Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (Private Island)

5 out of 5
What can you say about crystal clear, calm light blue water? Gorgeous! Perfect for swimming. What the Caribbean is all about! BBQ lunch was adequate, but the flies drove us crazy.

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
About as good as can be expected! Always a hassle, never any fun!
