Review summary

Overall an excellent cruise. One thing I did want to talk about is soot. Our friends booked an aft penthouse suite and the balcony was unusable. When they walked out on the balcony their bare feet were completely covered with black pellets that were difficult to remove. Sitting down on the furniture was not possible due to getting the soot all over one's clothes. I personally have stayed in about 5 aft cabins on various cruise ships and NEVER had this problem. I will attest that the smoke coming from the smoke stack on this cruise smelled much more strongly of diesel than on any of the other 25+ cruise ships I have been on. Not sure if this was due to the warm weather or the type of fuel used or the wind--but luckily our travelling companions were able to switch rooms quickly and efficiently after their first night. This wouldn't have been possible on a "full" cruise ship--but the ship was only 1/3 full due to Covid and the large number of last minute cancellations. Speaking of COVID--felt very safe on this ship--all Covid protocols were strictly followed and passengers were quite considerate of others--always wearing masks when appropriate (except for the casino where many took off their masks).

Embarkation

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Very much enjoyed the club class dining--had a separate dining area with waiters who got to know us personally. Enjoyed that we could walk up for dining anytime and not worry about making a reservation. The medallion system of ordering drinks is innovative and positive--but we noticed that our drink/food orders were "correct" only about 50% of the time. We started ordering drinks in our room by phone in order to get them as we wanted them (correct type of liquor, ice or not, number of drinks, olives, etc.) The canopes that are delivered on request if you are in club class were never delivered correctly when we filled out the request form--we would order 2 types of canopes and only got 1 tray of 4 canopes so we just stopped ordering. (We had our friends over before dinner and wanted more than 1 order of canopes). Re dinner in the club class dining room: There was no tableside meal preparation as "advertised"--maybe due to Covid. They did have Club Class specials daily that weren't on the general menu such as ribeye steak. Some of the sides (like zuccini and carrot cubes) appeared for multiple days on our plate--to the point that I started taking pics of them every time they were served. The beef served in the regular dining room was sometimes "tough"--this is often the case on cruise ships unless you go to the specialty dining steak house. Our friends who are much more particular about their drinks than we are complained that the "Old Fashioned" drink is described as containing Luxardo cherries--when in practice they contained Maraschino cherries (not something I would have even noticed.) Waiters in the Lido were plentiful and efficient--always getting us coffee, silverware, etc.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
We particularly enjoyed the Retreat Pool and Bar--very relaxing with steps going into the pool making it easier to enter the pool for those with walking issues. The bar service was the best on the ship in this area and it soon became our go to place on the ship. The area can get a bit windy under certain conditions. The other place we spend time at is the casino. It was nice--a decent assortment of slots and tables. Besides the usual blackjack, fun 21, craps, roulette, 3 card poker and let it ride they also had a baccarat table which was never in use. I will say that on other cruise lines the dealers and pit bosses generally recognize us by first name after the first several days--but on this cruise no one made an effort to greet us by our first names even though they obviously had the information available thru our medallion apps. Therefore, the casino just didn't feel as "personable" as it does on other cruise lines. We did have an incident when the blackjack dealer made a $100.00 mistake on my husband's hand. Since the cards are deposited so quickly into the automatic dealing machine--the dealer was unable to check the cards. The dealer insisted she was right. My husband insisted that they look at the "tape". My husband turned out to be correct and he received his $100 with no explanation or apology. We understand that human error occurs--but in other situations where a casino has made such a large mistake--generally at least there is an apology or some explanation. Oh well. Needless to say we watched our hands very closely after that and I must say that we spent less time at the casino after that than we would normally have. It would have been nice to see non mechanized dealing for at least the $25 minimum blackjack table.

Entertainment

Didn't go to any shows

Service and Staff

Excellent--everyone was friendly and attentive. Room steward was particularly good.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Ship was very clean. Lovely atrium area for people watching and meeting.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
One of the best cabins we have ever have due to the size of the balcony. No USB ports and limited electric outlets for CPAP (Steward had to bring us an extension cord which he taped down). The only true negative about the room was that the window in the sleeping area was completely pitted by the salt water and you couldn't see thru it. We had friends who also had a front facing cabin and their window was completely clear--so sounds like the window needs to be replaced. The reason this is listed as an "obstructed" balcony is because the balcony is metal instead of see thru glass. Also in the description of the suite it states that the balcony may not always be accessible. I suppose that if there were super high winds--they might limit access--but this didn't happen on our cruise.

Ship tip

Definitely do club class--if possible for you.

Agree. I am on the Regal now and am in one of the aft cabins. I can use the balcony but there is black soot on the floor. Glad you enjoyed your cruise. Thanks for the review

Club class is ni$e. I told the booking agent I would only accept an upgrade if it were to a club class cabin. We shall see… in a year.

The reason for the soot on the regal and all royal class ships is because they moved the stacks and ship is longer..
