Review summary

On July 14, 2017, we sailed for the fifth time with Royal Caribbean International. We sailed aboard Radiance of the Seas on a northbound Alaska and Hubbard Glacier cruise. Prior to this sailing, we also had been on many cruises, with other cruise lines. We have enjoyed traveling all over the world and have been very satisfied with the experiences. We have never complained about, or had a problem, with any of our staterooms. Our experience aboard Radiance of the Seas changed all of that for us. The bathroom in Stateroom 7620 smelled like ‘sewer gas’. Our Stateroom Attendant and ship maintenance personnel attempted to address the issue. All efforts were unsuccessful. Something was very faulty with the ventilation system in our stateroom during our entire cruise. It was actually sickening to have to use the bathroom. When we were in our stateroom, we had to keep our deck door open for fresh air. There were no other staterooms available for us to move to. Cara Thomas, Guest Service Manager, on Radiance of the Seas, offered us a 50% discount on the fare of a future cruise to be taken by July 27, 2018. The Royal Caribbean International Cruise Ticket Contract denies any refunds to passengers who experience serious problems with their staterooms. Given our experience on this cruise, why would we every want to cruise with Royal Caribbean International in the future???

The OP probably will never visit again this site again, just a "flyby complainer. Any ship can have this issue. Imagine the sewer system trying to deal with all the "stuff" that gets put down it.

***Tip: Pouring additional water into the floor and sink drain of your cabin usually solves the problem.***

We have been on two cruises over the years that had odor issues - one was Enchantment and the other was last year on Radiance. It got better after a few days (thankfully). I agree that Radiance didn't have lots of entertainment options but we grew to appreciate the ship as a very relaxing place to be. We haven't had any issues with the newer ships and find they usually have more activities.

I find it very difficult to believe that they did not have a single room or a suite that wasn't available even when motels are full they have rooms that are empty just in case.

We were on that same cruise! We loved it. I’m shocked that they couldn’t bring in the plumbers to fix it. They would have heard me.

The reason to not sail with them again is that they weren't able to rectify the situation and didn't offer a reasonable solution.

This problem can happen on any ship. They all use the same vacuum type toilets and plumbing. I agree that it was very unfortunate, but I don't agree that is reason to not sail with Royal Caribbean again. Just my opinion.

I hope you bought the insurance and that it will refund part of your money. They would have been moving me to the crews quarters and they could have stayed in that room if there were really no other rooms available. And I agree with you that I would see no reason to ever sail with them again.
