Review summary

We chose CUNARD for the ballroom dancing, we're 53 and 62 and were some of the youngest passengers. There were about 10 people our age or younger (of 2000). I couldn't get over how old the passengers were and how the entertainment was all stuck in a time warp - really very dull compared to other cruise lines we've been on. By 10pm everyone had gone to bed. If you're looking for a fun nightlife, this isn't for you.

Embarkation

3 out of 5
Getting on was great, very fast and pleasant. However leading up to boarding we found the website clunky and not as functional as other cruise lines. Information was conflicting, and we had to call the help line a few times to work things out.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The main dining room was amazing, very good indeed, best we've tasted. The specialty restaurants were really part of the buffet, cordoned off with a different menu and not worth doing. The Steakhouse is exceptional!! Wish we'd just done it twice, instead of signing up for the specialty restaurants.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
CUNARD insight lectures were great! Other activities were ok, the pub area was too small, the night club was pretty dead, and on karaoke night there was hardly anyone performing. It was pretty sad after 10 pm.

Entertainment

2 out of 5
Stage Shows and performers were great HOWEVER, the music stopped in 1970s. So if they had "dancing through the decades" it was 50s 60s and 70s - but nothing after that! Terrible. I felt like I was trapped at an old folks home listening to the same old disco music night after night. After 10pm on the ship, everything's over and everyone's gone home to bed.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Beautiful and very bougie!

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Mid range very nice, nothing exciting. Plumbing somewhat dodgy as the toilet had a slow leak and kept filling up and overflowing. Not fun.

Ship tip

Are you over 80? Then yes, this is the ship for you!! We chose QE because we are ballroom dancers and wanted to dance, but the dancefloor was monopolised by New Vogue dancers, and it's very hard to dance on a ship. So that was disappointing. The crowd were horror film old, really really old. If there had been a fire, we would have all died trying to get over the walkers.

Ports of call

Sydney, Australia

5 out of 5

Port Vila, Efate, Vanuatu

2 out of 5

Luganville, Vanuatu

5 out of 5
Blue Hole and Beach excursion worth a visit.

Suva, Fiji

2 out of 5
Apparently best excursion is a trip to the Pacific Hotel which sadly we didn't do. Suva itself is pretty dirty, decrepit and sad.

Noumea, New Caledonia

4 out of 5
Restaurants expensive and a bit awful, but maybe we chose poorly. A picnic with produce may have been better, something to remember if we go again.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
quick and easy, only slowed down by the incredibly old passengers.

Thanks for your review. Yes , guilty of being 60’s and 70 something cruisers.

At some point in life we will all be “old”. I am glad there is a cruise for these age stricken poor souls. My experience, Cunard Alaska has a lively crowd.

And that’s the beauty of cruising! Old folks need to enjoy their time too! I recommend sticking to NCL, RCL, or Carnival if you want a more rowdy crowd, however Cunard tend to be very old money, traditional cruising experience.:)

Thanks for sharing your current experience on Cunard. The QE2 was my first cruise and I was in my late teens at the time -- there were less than 25 of us (teens) on a 10-day caribbean cruise in January. We were the dancers and took over club lido every night. I digress, the next time you are in Nadi, Fiji take the Cloud 9 excursion -- it is a great time for all. I was there last October for my birthday. A land trip from Miami, FL USA. Remember, we all age and will still want to travel. Try Virgin Voyages -- that may be more your speed. I returned my first cruise with VV in December and I had a wonderful time.

Given the itinerary, I'm not surprised at the age. Go to Alaska on this ship to have a more active and age diverse crowd.

Sounds like you have a big problem with older people. Just a reminder, if it weren't for those old people, YOU wouldn't be here!

And you’d be fortunate to be able to cruise at any age

It may be sad, but one day, you too will be old.
