Overrated Ovation of the Seas VERY POOR experience by melcoz

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Family (older children)

As very experienced cruisers with close to 30 past cruises we Definitely would NOT recommend  this ship to anyone.  The best part was of our trip

getting offf the ship halfway through the cruise.  Most attractions were either closed or broken most of the time.  On the rare occasions that things were operating the lines were long and the experience very short and disappointing.  We were told that we would be dining in a different themed restaurant every night and this was not the case.   No steam or sauna in the locker rooms.   A very small, very poorly designed thermal suite was available at a pricey additional charge and often times the steam room was broken.   It is also a coed facility.  Mattresses were hard and no supplemental padding was available.   Most entertainment  was fair at best and often canceled and rescheduled.   Ports of call canceled which left many sea days with nothing to do as there were no real activities offered other than gambling and sales pitch type of seminars in the spa.  Outdoor decks were often CLOSED due to poor weather.   Ifly, Northstar, flow rider, walking tracks etc. all located on outdoor decks and not accessible.  Flowrider not operating properly much of trip and when operating correctly & when operating  staff arrived late and quit early most of the time most of the time.  Staff also lost key to basketball hoops and bumper cars.   We were told there is only one key which is really hard to believe.   Much difficulty with the spa when trying to book appointments.   We attempted to rectify many situations by discussing with upper management and things only got worse.    We have never before left a cruise halfway through but things were so bad that we decided to disembark the day before Christmas Eve and attempt to make other arrangements to salvage  what was left of our vacation.

Extremely Disappointed by Cruiser49610547

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

Quality of food not up to standard in any of the inclusive restaurants. Have travelled with various other cruise lines over the years and have never experienced this. Drinks prices extortionate so you're forced to buy a drinks package. Prices of excursions also extortionate. Continual very long queues at guest services too get any information. Paid for wi-fi which didn't work despite complaining. Again with relation to food, the Windjammer buffet resembled a zoo, Although staff were generally very polite they were in many cases ill trained. On the positive side, entertainment was excellent. I would never consider going on a Royal Caribbean cruise again.

Disappointing experience on this new ship "Ovation of the Seas" by jameswy

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

The ship was new and nice and big but we had the worst group of passengers one could ask for... rowdy, impolite, noisy.  The ports selected were not as interesting as expected especially as in Miyazaki and Busan where the ship arrived in the afternoon there was not much daylight left to explore. To make the experience worse food onboard was totally disappointing...the menu in every restaurant was basically the same throughout the 8 days and it was not even good... especially the Chinese menu was completely a disaster compared with the Chinese food we got ashore prior to the cruise.  The only saving grace was the service onboard.. most staff did their best to provide great service. And the shows helped to make the cruise less of a disaster.

Ovation of the Seas review by amandy41

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Family (young children)

I enjoyed the variety of food choices. I think there needs to be more things to do for children under 5. Would also be nice if the kids splash zone area could be indoors.  The days at sea were all very windy, so due to weather conditions it was always closed. And there is a new no diaper in the pool policy, so the kids could not swim at all. I would recommend this cruise ship to families that have older children (around 8 seems like the perfect age to enjoy all the children amenities)

Great looking ship but............ by mmoore0200

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Family (young children)

The ship itself was fabulous with all the newest bells and whistles.  There are things that I would change however as to accommodate the passengers better.

1.  Dining.  Since there is know longer a main dining room passengers are required to make reservations at the complimentary or fee restaurants.  When we tried to make reservations everything was booked so there were many times that myself and friend had to go without dinner, other than the Windjammer a person is "out of luck" if there's no room.   Either the restaurants need to open earlier or stay open later.  It was extremely disappointing.  The service and food was great in the restaurants we did eat at with the exception of the Grand where the service really stunk.  Over an 1 1/12 to just get dinner and had to leave for the show we had reservations for. Yes you also need to make reservations for the shows or you miss out on seeing them too.

2.  The internet was bad at the best.  Trouble logging on, then the signal would drop or you couldn't get logged on.  It was impossible to try to do anything.

3.  I love the ID bracelets for all onboard purchases and to get into the cabins.

4.  The cruise ports need lots of attention.  I realize that this was the first time for RCL Ovation of the Seas to be in these ports but it was really a hassle and inconvenience for the passengers with things not being done correctly. For example, Xiamen has a big problem with giving cruisers a ride back to the ship.  We had 5 drivers tell us no and take other fares.  I finally jumped in a cab and refused to get out and then my group of 8 jumped in with me. South Korea onboard immigration was a joke as you know.  These cities need to realize the revenue the ship and passengers bring to their cities/countries and they need to be prepared and willing to help the passengers.

5.  Diamond Club nightly happy hour.  It is totally unfair that a Diamond member cannot bring their traveling mate to these events.  I didn't participate because I didn't want to leave my friend alone.  It would be nice to have meet other Diamond members and socialize and I know I am not the only one who feels this way,

Amazing experience, beautiful ship! by luisluis

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Family (young children)

This was an amazing trip!  We loved the ports and cultures we were able to experience with this cruise. The ship is gorgeous with plenty of activities  for everyone of all ages. Shows are incredible. Royal Caribbean has done an impeccable  job once again. I recommend booking dinners,  shows and onboard activities either prior to the cruise or on the first day of the cruise.  Everything fills up quickly and unfortunately we missed out on a couple of shows and activities due to procrastination on our part. I highly recommend this itinerary and ship!! Happy

Not Exclusive by Cruiser99967078

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

Relaxation, Dressing up for dinner and the first line staff.

The officers including the Captain require to learn some leadership qualities in customer engagement, the coffee facilities in the rooms was none existing and disgusting in all restaurants,if you wished to have a fried egg for breakfast be prepared to wait for 15 minutes.

I thought I was getting and paying for a  superior ocean view cabin but then again everybody else was also, they were all the same.

Lets get this straight, this was only weeks into this ships maiden voyage but on this basis which I can only base my opinion on, No I cannot recommend this company.

Wonderful Journey with the Ovation of the Seas by aracelicarbonel

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Singles/Friends

The wonderful parts of this Cruise are the Entertainment and the Delicious Sumptuous Foods served in numerous restaurants in the ship.  The entertainments provided in the Royal theater plus the Music Hall and the Two/70 hall and more have been great that guests have not found any dull moments in the cruise for more than two weeks of stay.  Indeed, it has been a memorable journey along the Mediterranean and the Middle East.  I strongly recommend this ship to all my frirnds, relatives and families.  INDEED,.GREAT VOYAGE!

Ovation is an amazing playground for families by LearningCurve2

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Singles/Friends

An amazing ship for all ages of passengers.

Fabulous and unique production shows.

The Windjammer buffets were excellent in every way, the staff could not have been more helpful.

I do NOT care for the "Dynamic Dining" reservation system as it prohibits people from, randomly, meeting others (as with the "anytime" dining in main dining rooms of most ships).

For that reason I may not sail on Quantum-class ships again.

27TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY by zoe165

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

This cruise was very special for us as we celebrate our marriage of 27 years. The ship is georgeous a wonderful piece of art and well designed.Having cruised before on several occasions, the new restaurant concept was one of me difficulty.I have been accustomed to the family atmosphere table for a week with the same waiter and waitress. This cruise also made me qualify for the Emerald Status.

a great cruise

2nd day of cruise. While... by patpend

Sail Date: /

2nd day of cruise. While the ship is nice, I'm surprised at lack of automation. Muster drill they had to manually check off from list and the "coffee select" is a physical card that has to be punched. Unlike Princess a large Expresso or Venta costs 2 punches. Also checkin was slower because they didn't automate like Princess. This is our 1st cruise on RCL.

INCREDIBLE ALASKA CRUISE by beekerbeatty

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

We always wanted to do an Alaska Cruise but thought it was a one time then stroke it off our bucket list destination. NOT AT ALL !!! My husband and I loved it and will definitely go back. Alaska is the most beautiful and cleanest destination that we have ever visited.

Handicapped cruiser finds comfort and care by Hadassah28

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

Loved this beautiful ship. Very well designed and very accommodating for mobility challenged. The adult area Solarium is the best of all ships we have sailed aboard. Complete with its own bistro and bar. Perfect! Be sure to stay a few days in Honolulu before embarking.

A little disappointing by chelbob

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

A little disappointed overall due to itinerary changes (didn't really feel like the HAWAIIAN cruise we originally signed up for), main dining room quality of food, and felt lack of organization related to The Key benefits, photo pre-purchase, and tendering. At the end of the day, any vacation is a good vacation, but it didn't quite live up to our expectations based on previous Royal Caribbean experiences.

30 Year Wedding Anniversary Hawaii to Canada by UntamedLaw

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

Enjoyed the cruise overall even with the itinerary changes. We understand and expect changes due to unforeseen circumstances which has occurred previously. Unfortunately, our opinion, our first experience with RCCL making excuses instead of addressing the problem to get to the resolution. We did not see one commanding officer during disembarkation to take control of the debacle...felt sorry for the employees in the luggage area who had no answers to why our luggage was did not start to come down until after 8:00 am. Keep in mind they expect us to have our luggage in the hallways the night before by 10:00 pm and we were alaready at the port. There was only excuses and no one accepted responsibility.

We did the 11 night... by AKdreamer

Sail Date: /

We did the 11 night Honolulu to Vancouver cruise to test how we feel about longer cruises before we try a transatlantic really long cruise. Originally, it was to have an overnight in Maui, one day in Kona, Napoli coast and volcano sail by and a full day in Victoria. As we got closer to the cruise ( but well past final payment) they announced we were going to lose the day in Kona due to having to stay in Honolulu an extra day for inspections...we also were not going to do the Napoli coast (although they changed that later and skipped the volcano instead) and they also cut Victoria to just a few hours instead of all day to get to Vancouver a day early since they had to time the tides to get under the bridge. So, this was all pretty frustrating, but for us, we were mostly going for the sea days and didn’t mind additional time in Honolulu. Lots of people however, were extremely upset by all of this. RCCL failed in the pre cruise customer service dept. in a big way. But once we were on board, things got much better. We did get the Ultimate dining package since it includes lunch on sea days....sooo glad we did this! You also get discounts on wine at dinner, so we didn’t need to get the drink package at all. For us this was worth it for a heavy sea day cruise, but we probably wouldn’t do it for a port heavy cruise. We aren’t dining room people and the buffet wasn’t to our liking, but we tried all the specialty restaurants and they were amazing! Our favorites were Jaimes and Izumi. The free pizza at Sorrentos was also very good. The cafe at 270 has a super cool feel to it, and was really nice for a sandwich or salads. Our room was a midship, deck 11 balcony and was beautiful with tons of storage. It’s the best cabin and bathroom we have had in our cruise experience thus far. Balcony was large and had comfortable chairs. The major complaint would be the hardness of the bed...I mean rock hard! The bedding and the pillows were really nice, but the bed itself was pretty terrible. We should have asked for a mattress topper, but didn’t really think of that until cruise was almost over (our bad). We loved the layout of the ship! It only felt crowded after shows let out or when people were headed to the dining rooms. We aren’t morning people, so by the time we got out and about, the early morning pool people were headed to lunch. The buffet which we only ate at a few times would get crowded, but there was an abundance of seating areas and we enjoyed the outside seating at the back. My husband did the indoor skydiving (which I reserved pre cruise) and LOVED IT! We also did bumper cars several times...so much fun and the line moves fast so no big deal with that. We didn’t do the surfing and the roller skating times never fit with our schedule...but looked fun. We were able to do the North Star on the last day and it was super cool! No reservations necessary as they can only run it in the right conditions, but again the lines move pretty quickly. Now the shows...we have done NCL and are always blown away by the entertainment. So, we were pretty disappointed with the entertainment here. To be fair, we didn’t see all the shows. We did see their hyped up show called Pixels (which is the only one that requires reservations) and to be honest...it was pretty terrible. We saw the Vegas style show Live Long Legs and it was actually really good. The other shows and the magicians and stuff like that really didn’t interest us. There was a guy singing nightly in the Pub that was good and fun. We enjoyed Pandora’s Box , which was an Aerosmith cover band...that was really fun. And we enjoyed the 70’s theme party. The pool game is high with this ship...great outdoor, indoor and solarium pools! The solarium is unbelievably beautiful and peaceful...especially at night. The service was wonderful and we honestly had one of our best cruise experiences on this beautiful ship. We would definitely sail on her again. One piece of advice, if you sail on a large ship like this, remember to go with the flow and relax. It will take longer for debarkation and tendering. And sometimes, when your at sea, weather can be bad and ports can get canceled. But don’t be one of the constant complainers that we unfortunately ran into many times on this cruise. Life is what you make it and hopefully you will choose to look at changes as adventure instead of annoyances. The Ovation was a dream ship, and I hated to leave her. If you sail her, please give the baby panda bear a special hug from me🤗
