The scenery was breathtaking, the service excellent, the food more than one could ask for and the ports well chosen. Overall a very relaxing and visually pleasing cruise.

Take this as your first cruise by DaveH4

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

For our first cruise, we loved our seven-day Norwegian Star cruise to Alaska. Our mid-ship balcony room was very convenient to get to either end of the ship (and you do that trek constantly), and as a room was compact but with a larger bed than we expected. We enjoyed the balcony a lot for the private viewpoint away from crowds, and our room attendant was efficient and sweet, making fancy towel-animals every night to greet us. The best choice we made was to pay the add-on for unlimited use of the Barong Spa, with reclining jacuzzi, hot tub, lap pool, wet and dry saunas, and (the best) padded lounge chairs facing huge back-of-ship view windows. Best yet: few users meant heavenly quiet and a large space away from the crowds. The restaurants were unexpectedly high-quality. Versailles became our favorite, but we used the fee-applies Cagney's Steakhouse for an extra-special anniversary dinner; La Cucina Italian, and Endless Summer, a TexMex place. For instant food the Market Cafe had endless and wide varieties of entrees, breads, fruits, desserts, and also hosted special food events (Chocolate Festival night!) The ports we called at were well-equipped to receive us and off-loading was efficient. Excursion providers were stationed right off the boat; my favorite was being able to walk off the boat and get right onto the Skagway Railway which had a siding going specially near our boat. For add-ons: I recommend the Mendenhall Glacier bus ride and the Skagway Railway trip.

NCL typical dissapointments by SueF6

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

The NCL freestyle is not a good fit for everybody. Same menu for lunch and dinner at the Blue Lagoon - one page - had it memorized by day 2 or 3. Same lunch menue everyday in the main dining room - gets real old after day 2 or 3!

A disappointing experience with NCL by JayL2

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

Overall the cruise line did the bare minimum to meet customers' needs. They spent all their time and effort on fee-based services. The $12 per person per day service charge is hefty and was not revealed in booking.

My first cruise - I'm not a big fan of i by AndyJ1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

It was worthwhile cruising to Alaska as you would have a difficult time reaching these places another way. Scenery was nice, despite poor weather. Could have used another stop. Could have used a stop in Victoria. Service was sometimes great - sometimes terrible. Aqua Restaurant had great service (it was free) but Versailles (also free) had terrible service. Even though we booked a package ahead of time for 3 tours, the NCL staff were clueless about any of them once we got on shore and we were lucky to find them. The 'Jeep Adventure' was a total waste - the offroading went nowhere.

Good Cruise in a Balcony Cabin by EdwardB1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

I did a cruise on this ship 3years ago and spent 90% of my time in the spinaker lounge forward deck 12 with glass completely around the front. They took the spinaker lounge and moved it aft (no windows) and took the great view, where it once was forward and added high price suites. Really a disappointment. So I ended up spending most of the time on the balcony in my balcony room. This was nice, but the inter-action with other cruise passengers was lacking. What really go my attention was that the $18 bucket of beer had increased to $39 (includes the 15% gratuity)

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends

The ship still needs work on coverings. sofas in state rooms worn badly. too pushy for photos to make money. lines for food too long. people use cafiteria for playing cards. holding up others to eat. food the same always.
