Review summary

Disappointing staff demeanor, smoking allowed indoor areas.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
Pretty good, but lack of amplified announcements (agents yelling above the crowd to marshal passenger boarding groups).

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Food was only par, nothing special. Bars were, of course, good.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Didn't do any activities, too many little kids.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Stage shows were mediocre, lacking in originality. Except the acrobatic Russian couple, they were quite good. Melodic Trio in various venues were excellent.

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
Guest services desk personnel seemed disengaged, curt and dismissive. No smiles or pleasantries. Room steward seemed very concerned about keeping his job after I answered an off-hand question from Hotel Director's Secretary that there were no bathrobes in our stateroom. Photo shop person showed his disappointment that we chose only one photograph to purchase, and dismissed us from the counter by shouting "Next person in line" as he passed the photo to us, no pleasantries. Bar staff were very pleasant.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Norwegian just doesn't want to enter the 21st century with regard to smoking policy. Smoke from the Casino wafting about in decks 6 & 7 forward (on the way to Stardust) is totally unacceptable to us and is a cleanliness and health issue for all passengers.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Cabin seemed quite small for the upgrade to a mini-suite that I paid for. As far as I could tell, a plastic pull-curtain is the only differentiation between a Balcony Stateroom and a Mini-Suite. Cleanliness was OK, but ledges on wainscoting hadn't been dusted in some time. I dusted them myself. The single closet was a design nightmare. It was so close to the edge of the bed, and the doors opened toward the bed. Had to sit on the bed, open doors by alternating with my knees. With closet open, so dark in there that I had to use a flashlight to find my clothing items. Only one 110V outlet in cabin area, as opposed to three 220V outlets. There was a 110V outlet for shaver in bathroom.

Ship tip

Make sure that you reserve Specialty restaurants BEFORE embarkation. I was told by Reservation Desk person "that's what SMART passengers do".

Ports of call

San Pedro (Los Angeles), California

3 out of 5
Port facility pretty industrial looking, in need of an update/renovation. BB-63 Iowa battleship next door was neat.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

3 out of 5
No excursion. Port facility typical third world. local vendors besieging tourists. Need to calm that down. Shopping too far from pier, and in an unsecured area. Transportation available for handicapped only, security is the issue, however.

Mazatlan, Mexico

4 out of 5
Took a private van tour of Mazatlán, Norwegian excursions too expensive. Port facility much more relaxed than PV, felt more comfortable and at ease.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

4 out of 5
Took Norwegian Land's End 45 minute tour, very nice. Don't understand why it was necessary to assemble at 6:50 am in Stardust. We had 5 hours after the tour to knock around Cabo, so ship's schedule couldn't have been the concern. Ship's personnel couldn't/wouldn't address the question.

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
Dismal. When my color was called, it took an hour and a half to clear the terminal. Didn't realize that the line went nearly the full length of the ship inside, and then back again on the outside. Standing that long with screaming toddlers everywhere isn't my idea of a pleasant disembarkation.
