Review summary

Majority of the cruise, from check in to final departure was quite disorganized and with minimal appropriate communication from NCL. Initial check in took approximately 1 hour and was stopped for luggage check but security had no idea what he was looking for.  Lines were too long and sluggish. Once onboard the cruise director and his staff were obnoxious and consistently interrupting the cruise with over enthusiastic interruptions to play bingo, but raffle tickets, etc. Perhaps they should stress passenger satisfactions and decrease the constant sales gimmicks.  The majority of the entertainment was very good, with the exception of one performer who was panned by all passengers I spoke with.  The ship bands (Avalon and Future Perfect) were very good but when they weren't playing on the deck the DJ would quickly come on and blare extremely loud rock and rap at a volume that was near painful (turn down the speaker volume please) so that people can speak to each other without yelling.  Also, the frequent pool deck interruptions of very loud yelling from assistant cruise directors leading college spring break like play-by-play of beer pong and hairiest leg contests was disruptive.  Please continue the games if you wish but you need not yell at full volume into microphones so that every one is immersed constantly. Discussions with other passengers agreed with the above assessments.  Finally, the lines to exit and renter the ship at ports were far less organized and took far longer than previous cruises I have taken.  State room acceptable and food was routine although I did not find the cleanliness to be up to previous cruises on other lines. Discussions with other passengers agreed with the above assessments. While certainly not totally unacceptable the cruise was far from standards I have experienced on other lines and I would be unlikely to repeat this cruise.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Should have beverage dispensers on pool deck. Not everyone is looking to drink liquor.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Except for one poor performer, the talent was very good but the production standards were amateurish (no fault of the individual performers). Bands and show singers and dancers were very good but show cast deserved better production standards to exhibit their individual talents.

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
Singers Brittany and Raquel were top notch.

Ship Quality

1 out of 5
Not up to usual cruise standards

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Acceptable for an inside cabin. As a frequent cruiser I knew what to expect as regards size and amenities .

Ship tip

Consider a different ship unless NCL makes some changes.

Ports of call

Miami, Florida

Oranjestad, Aruba

Cartagena, Colombia

Colon, Panama

Port call was on Christmas day, most stores were closed and stop was only about 3 hours, too short a time to get off and on shop and still have time to explore.

Puerto Limon, Costa Rica

How about just enjoying the cruise you bought the best you can and not walk around with a pen and pad writing down every negative that you are LOOKING for and bugging other guests.

What? I can't hear you! How about we meet in the Cigar Room? It's NICE AND QUIET! Seriously, you need to be on Cunard, or HAL, the cruise for the nearly dead. I loved the SAME CRUISE I took as you and loved (almost) every minute. Not every meal was fabulous, but they made up for it with service and chocolate desserts. Watch my videos and see if your experience was anything like mine.

Although I've never been on NCL, I will agree with the volume level being too high. It's bad enough when on deck, but much worse when they blare the music inside.

To all lines -- tone it down a few decibels.

I think mixers/DJ's equate greatness with loudness.

I don't appreciate loud music or too many announcements, either.

Never been on the Pearl, but have cruised NCL frequently.

Room cleanliness seems to be suffering on many ships due to staff reductions.  More cabins, fewer stewards = less time for attention to detail.  Stewards actually used to have assistants on some ships.

Entertainment, varies from ship to ship.  Many comedians, I find, are just not funny.  Tired jokes about cruisers (over) eating.

P.A. Announcements are very common.  In the morning especially when in port.  Thankfully, no longer in the cabins except for emergencies.

College kids on holiday break !  That one is on you.  Timing.  One reason not to take a holiday cruise.  Unless it's on a more expensive line such as Celebrity or Princess.

Reads to me like you and the other passengers that agreed with you should navigate your way towards more quiet lines like Princess or Cunard. The majority of the things you and the other passengers that agreed with you happen on every cruise ship that is considered a party cruise line like NCL and Carnival. Many people that cruise look for the party atmosphere. Seems you do not. And an hour to embark...REALLY? And your complaining??
