Review summary

Beginning with our embarkation at the new port of Houston, Norwegian Cruise Line made it so easy.  My wife and I have been on eight cruises with various cruise lines.  This was the easiest embarkation to navigate yet.  From the beginning we were made to feel very important.  The staff was friendly and extremely helpful. The Jewel was the third Norwegian ship on which we cruised.  It was clean, the staff was terrific, everything was organized, the food was wonderful, there was plenty of room in the dining rooms and there was plenty of room in the buffet dining room without having to wait for a table.  The buffet was well organized with lots of room to maneuver a power chair without running others down.

Although we've been to Cozumel several times before, it was fun to see the many changes in the port. The port was clean and the vendors were typical of Mexico. Belize City was our second port of call.  We took a most interesting River cruise up the Old Belize River then journeyed to the Mayan Ruins of Altun Ha.  It was the best six hours of our time.  The third port of call was Trujilla, Honduras.  It will be the next best port in the very near future.  The port first opened in October, 2014, and the building of the pier is underway. The kiosks at the port were new, the rest rooms were clean and tidy, and the vendors were some of the best artisans we have come across in all our travels.

Weather was near perfect (we cruised March 21-28).  Temperatures were in the 80's to low 90's in all three ports which made all of our excursions the best possible, especially the swimming and snorkeling.

Arriving back in the Port of Houston, Norwegian made disembarkation a dream.  Using their colored tags corresponding to a 15 minute time slot, we were able to walk off the ship, pick up our luggage, and walk through customs in a matter of 25 minutes.  It could not have been easier.

The whole experience with Norwegian Cruise Lines was One of the Best vacations we have had.  We give it a 5 Star rating!  We are already planning our next cruise.  I believe it will be with Norwegian!

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
We ate in the main dinging rooms and at the Garden Cafe (buffet). The food was superb and the choices unbelievale. We found no need to eat at the specialty restaurants except for a special occasion.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
If you could not find some sort of entertainment while on the ship, you pobably locked yourself in your cabin. Bordom is not in the cards for the Norwegian Jewel. Our cruise director, Jaimie, made sure of that!

Entertainment

5 out of 5
The evening shows were always great with a wide variety of entertainment.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Overall, the service and the staff were great. Our room steward was fantastic. We called him JR, who is now on a three month "vacation". JR made our life on the ship so easy. He was friendly and always there when needed.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
The ship was extremly clean, planty of room to maneuver even with a power chair.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Our cabin was spacious enough for two people with plenty of storage. The balcony was sufficient.

Ship tip

The ship was large enough to accommodate its 2600 passengers with ease. At no time did we feel crowded. The Garden Café was especially spacious with plenty of room to maneuver the food lines and always an open table at which to eat. There were also plenty of tables designated for the handicapped.

Ports of call

Houston, Texas

5 out of 5
We have friends and relatives living in Houston, which makes it a great destination for us. There are thousands of things to do in Houston, you would never be bored. So give yourself a few extra days before your cruise to explore the thousands of points of interest. Then when you return from your cruise, rent a car and travel to San Antonio (about a 3 1/2 hour trip) and explore the River Walk. You will not be disapointed.

Cozumel, Mexico

5 out of 5
We have been to Cozumel three times, yet we can always find something new to do. A 45 minute boat ride to Playa del Carmen would be an excellent option.

Belize City, Belize

5 out of 5
This was our first time in Belize, which gave us many options. Our first choice was the Old Belize River trip. We traveled up the river for 21 miles and saw manatees, monkeys, crocodiles, bats and iguanas. We even had a dolphin swimming alongside our boat for several miles. Then we toured the Mayan ruins of Altun Ha. It was the best 6 hours we could have spent exploring the country of Belize.

Trujillo, Honduras

3 out of 5
Trujillo is a new destination on the mainland of Honduras. But give it a few years and it will become one of the best destinations in the Caribbean. They are presently building a pier to eliminate the tendering. That will make the port more assessible for handicap people. However, the port was new, the restrooms were neat and clean and the vendors were some of the best artisans I have ever seen. We're looking forward to visiting Trujillo again in the very near future. It is an up-and-coming destination.

I have never visited Trujillo so I will have to research it.  Thanks for your port tip on it.
