Review summary

Favorite part was the 7 Night Premium Dining Pkg. except when their supposed elite Ocean Blue restaurant that has an addl $17.95 up charge on top of premium pig told family members they were not eligible for certain meal.  I thought it was very very tacky and the crab legs were dried out and the worst I've ever been served. I'd skip that restaurant all together. The Garden Cafe buffet (Lido deck) was, for the most part Bad. It was nice that they still had scones for a late afternoon snack. The scrambled eggs and omelette were almost inedible and were not made from fresh eggs. They had no decent breakfast potatoes and if you ordered them in the dining room you got the same stuff from the buffet, literally 3 small pieces of potato with 10 pieces of pepper. The dining rooms are are not good. Took 4 tries for the photo group to get picture order correct. Took 90 minutes to get a minor billing error corrected that would have taken 10 minutes on another cruise line. They skipped our premium port in Belize because they said the new dock was damaged by a thunderstorm. Seems strange when Norwegian built the dock to withstand hurricanes. I gotta say that Norwegian seems to cancel shore stuff a lot. I think they make a lot more money on their casino and bars when we are at sea. My cabin had Old water in the ice bucket, crumbs on the dresser and my sheets smelled when we boarded. First time we ever had such issues. Never got several of daily papers in the cabin, no disembarkation info provided in room. This ship had the worst management of any company or ship we have been on. It's sad because she is a beauty and most of the entertainment was good. Not the Illusionarium!  Took over 3 hours to get off the ship. The line of people went from one end of the ship to the other, it was horrendous. They tried to blame it on Custums but they were prompt,  it was Norwegian's poor management to do that to people, many elderly. Another person in line said she had been on the same ship the year before and had the same issue, they had done nothing to correct the problem. I don't know what to say except that Norwegian couldn't pay me for the frustration we had to deal with last week. Horrible!!!

Buffet & dining rooms poor at best

Dirty, sheets smelled like fried food and ice bucket had Old water in it. Never had fresh ice entire trip. Mini bar didn't work.

Ship tip

Don't go on it. The Gem was delightful. Skip this ship if possible. They treat you like cattle.

Book Nacionale hotel for the day. See Trip Advisor, it was a wonderful experience with best food and drinks of trip all included. Treated like royalty, owned and managed by Americans.

Cozumel, Mexico

Take a taxi to Chankanaab park. Best water in the Caribbean, lots of other stuff to do, good safe food. Been there a dozen times, always love it.

Different strokes for different folks. That being said, NCL is like a 4 star hotel. A lot of people here seem to expect 5 star dining and service.

Sorry.....you didn't understand what l was trying to say, the time to get off the ship was over 2 hours , actually nearly 2 1/2 hours for us that was not good enough.

"two hours before it was good enough".....good enough for who? sounds to me like u were just being way too picky. Getaway was amazing!

Ukbears    7 years ago

Forgot to add.....both ours and my daughter sheets were changed, but they still had that horrible smell of greasy backs...NCL need to replace all the bedding.

Sorry l have to agree with Debbiecera, l was not going to comment ,we got off on 04/16 ,we had many issues starting with my daughters cabin needing to be cleaned, it took 2 stateroom attendants and 1 supervisor ,two hours before it was good enough , staff didn't seam happy, l do understand that is was very busy and lots of passengers wanting service but that's the job, hard to get eye contact with servers,or any interaction from them, disappointing after having such a great time last year on Escape .We decided to get breakfast in our room after the first morning,l actually spoke to a female passenger in the garden cafe who had been very upset by people pushing and pulling around her , it was her first cruise,,l suggest she do the same and get breakfast delivered, it was fantastic we sat on the balcony and enjoyed every day, beautiful presented and always on time.....we thought the food was generally very good on board.....over 2hours to get off...that just isn't good enough .

sorry you had bad experience. although I am looking forward to the ports I am prepared to have a change of plans after research but another sea day is still better than a day at the office in my world.

Troll. Your profile says you've only been on one cruise so I'm not sure how you are comparing NCL to other cruise lines.

Agree with the previous comment. Although not perfect we really had a great vacation on the Getaway. I don't know what type of food you were expecting, but (although not gourmet outstanding) we found the food to be very fresh and of good quality and selection. You should have tracked down your room steward and asked him to address your cabin issues. We always asked ours to help out and he was excellent in addressing issues.

I sailed the Getaway in January, and had a fabulous time! Not sure if your just picky, or all these things actually happened. I found the buffet food to be excellent! I generally don't bother with specialty restaurants, so I can't comment to the problems you had with Ocean Blue. Sorry about your not docking at Harvest Caye. It was wonderful there, and I certainly hope we dock there on my next cruise on the Getaway in January. Yes, they do make a lot of money at the casino and bars when at sea, but they do not cancel ports for that reason. And if you indeed had that many issues with your room steward, you should have gone to customer service, complained, and recieved a different one. The debarking issue has been an ongoing problem. Did you do self assist off? As that seems to be the one with the most issues of long lines. I left with a tour group with no problems, but I won't be in January (I've done all the post cruise tours that they offer) so I hope it goes smoother.
