Review summary

We had a great time but had some disappointments as well.

You now have to reserve seats for almost all of the shows and there are charges for most of their big productions as they serve diner with them. This was my 10th cruise and 3rd with NCL and have not seen this before.

Upscale dining package was amazing. My favorite was Cagneys steak house.

We met a couple on the cruise that picked the Upscale dining package as one of their free picks and they were not able to even go to one because they did not make their reservations in advance of getting on the ship so they were all booked.

Also very disappointed in Harvest Caye Belize. Snorkeling was listed as an excursion but was not available due to 'Technical difficulties'. It's NCL's new private island and that's all it is. There was a lot of garbage on the beach and in the water. The beaches in Florida are much better. We also missed our excursion zip lining in Roatan due to our ship being diverted to Cozumel for a medical emergency. All NCL excursions were cancelled that day as we only ended up having about 3 1/2 hours there. Definitely disappointing.

Costa Maya is also a poor excuse of a stop.

Cozunel 3 reef snorkeling excursion was awesome!

The ship itself is beautiful but there are a lot of passengers so expect long lines and difficulties getting lawn chairs by the Pools. Waiting line for the ropes course was almost 2 hours.

Staff in the shops were very pushy. One actually grabbed my arm to pull me into a jewelry shop to show me the big clearance sale. I refused to go.

My experience on this ship is nowhere near as good as my previous experiences.

Beautiful room. Big and comfy. Very nice sized bathroom for a cruise ship

Ship tip

Book everything in advance including up scale dining. Try to get Vibe passed if you don't have kids traveling with you. They sell out right away and you cannot book them in advance. We got on the ship at 12:00 and they were already sold out.

Can you tell us which shows had upcharges besides illusionarium? The headline shows are in the majn theater and they don't serve food in there.

What did you do in Costa Maya? It was our favorite stop of them all! We visited Mayan ruins and then spent a few hours on the nicest beach we saw on the whole cruise. The beach was spectacularly beautiful with great service.

In order to guarantee and mission to any show or specialty restaurant, it is always wise to reserve prior to boarding for your cruise. And the only dinner show I was aware of for my January cruise was the Illusionarium. We did it, and loved it. All the other big shows, Burn The Floor, Million Dollar Quartet, Comedians, Howl at the Moon Dueling Pianos----had absolutely NO fee attached to them!! So I really don't know what you are referring to. Sorry your Harvest Caye experience was less than satisfactory because it was perfect for us in January. I only wish NCL offered a free buffet lunch there, as offered on other private beaches/islands. I do understand that although it was a NCL developed private island for NCL exclusively, it is run by the country of Belize, so no free lunch. Yes, it is always disappointing to miss a port, but it happens frequently in cruising for a variety of reasons. It just happens, so we deal with it. As for Costa Maya--we only looked around the shops and got back on ship. My advice to people would be to book an excursion, if seeing more of the area is desired. Yes, there are a lot of passengers on this ship, but I cruised this ship after having cruised RCCL Oasis of the Seas, and the Getaway felt just perfect at 4500 passengers as opposed to the Oasis at 6000!! I never used the rope course, but when I am back on the Getaway in January 2018 with other family members, I hope that line will not be 2 hours then, for their sake. I'm hoping that because it is the first week kids are back at school after Christmas break, there will be fewer kids on board. As for getting a lounge chair by the pool--that is ALWAYS a problem on ANY cruise ship!! There will always be chair hogs, and the only way to get a lounger is to become a chair hog yourself. If waking up at 0600 and going out to reserve a lounge chair is not something you (or myself) would like to do, we have to deal with the lack of available prime loungers. So, in final--sorry the Getaway was not everything you hoped for. To me it was paradise, and cannot wait to share it with my family in January!!
