Review summary

Definitely a ship for older individuals. Take the Escape if traveling with children.

Embarkation

3 out of 5
Had us waiting in a stuffy side hall until we could get on the ship.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Only ate at the buffets due to having a youngster that doesn't do well with waiting. Food was good but lacked in variety.

Onboard Activities

2 out of 5
Ship lacked in toddler friendly activities. One small room with toys for children under 3. Not well marked and only accessible by walking through kids pool area.

Children's Programs

1 out of 5
Guppies program needs a revamp.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Nothing but positive interactions with the staff. They were all excellent.

Ship Quality

2 out of 5
Not child friendly. Most common areas clean. Windows extremely dirty. Some areas of the ship were dirty and didn't look to have been cleaned all week.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Beds were hard and uncomfortable. We had 3 adults and a toddler in our cabin. Seemed to be a good use of space.

Ship tip

If you are travelling with little ones, be prepared to spend most of your time onboard finding your own ways to entertain your child.

Ports of call

Boston, Massachusetts

1 out of 5
Port facilities need a revamp.

Royal Naval Dockyard, West End, Bermuda

5 out of 5
Gorgeous! Did not do an excursion, but toured on our own. Beautiful island!

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
Waited in line for a long time before allowed to get off the ship. This, after waiting for a longer period of time indoors before being allowed to line up.

We did do some research and the person we spoke with over the phone assured us that the ship was kid-friendly and that there would be plenty to do for a child his age. This, however, was not the case.

I hate to break it to you, but cruising with a toddler is not usually fun under any circumstance. I’ve never heard anyone rave about going on a cruise with a child under 4. Also, you need to do some research. If you’d done some investigating, you would have discovered that the Gem is not the best option for kids. You live and learn.
