The weather, which you can't change was rainy and cold, but the cruise was entertaining. It was relaxing and would highly recommend it.
Embarkation
3 out of 5
The check in process was very slow, but once on board things went very smoothly
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
4 out of 5
Buffet was just OK, but the specialty restaurants were great! The dining room staff was wonderful and the food was very good.
Onboard Activities
3 out of 5
There were activities for all ages, but we had a lot of rain so on those sea days, there didn't seem that there was enough to do

Service and Staff
4 out of 5
All the staff was very friendly and the service was great. Sometimes the bars were slow, but with so many people getting the beverage package, the bars are always crowded
Ship Quality
4 out of 5
The ship was clean in all common areas. The Gem is a smaller ship and there are many areas to find a quiet spot to sit and just read. My husband and I like the smaller ships for that reason

Ship tip
This is one of the smaller ships that Norwegian has, it holds about 2300 passengers. You have to figure out which elevator is the best to use as some don't go all the way to the lower decks. Kick back and enjoy.
Rain all day, so we only saw the small shops right off the pier and our excursion was terrible. It was a Whale watching tour that should have been canclled due to the weatherr.
Nice little town with many shops and good places to eat. We went on a nature cruise with the Bar Harbor Whale Watching Co. and had an excellent tour guide and the weather was beautiful.
Didn't see much of this town as it was raining heavy all day. We did manage to go on a lobster pull cruise with the Lucky Catch Cruises. Had a great time and then had a lobster meal at the Portland Lobster Co. with the lobsters from the boat.
Good review! We like the smaller ships for the very same reasons you mention.
Also thanks for comment on the weather. Helps explain some of the uncharacteristic negative reviews that are showing up!
