Review summary

The ship, the Gem is awesome. The food was great. The stateroom, midship balcony was small, yet comfortable. The service was excellent, staff was attentive. Plenty of things to do onboard. The first two ports are very nice, we went to Cocoa Beach for some shopping, and Great Stirrup Cay, NCL's private island, was fun. Our stop in Nassau wasn't the greatest. The port area was a tad seedy. As soon as we got to Festival Place we were acosted by many "cabbies"  offering tours etc. That really isn't our thing. Some of our port departures were earlier than advertised, however, we were already back on board by then. The two days back to New York were kind of a let down. While on the way down to Canaveral there was lots to do on board. Excursion planning, shopping highlights, etc. On the way back there was some shows but not many geared towards our age group.  We enjoyed ourselves, it was a nice trip. We have heard that after our cruise, the route was modified, with more port time and even an overnight. We will definitely cruise with Norwegian again.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Stayed with the main dining rooms for most meals. Only ate in the buffet for breakfast

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Very attentive staff. The bar wait staff don't get any of the prepaid gratutities, so bring a bunch of dollar bills to tip with, we mainly dealt with one waiter and after a few tips he would come right over whenever we were nearby.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Beautiful ship, comfortable staterooms. Nice layout.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Small, yet very comfortable, mattress was great, sheets comfortable. Maybe an extra blanket would have been nice. Loved openeing door a little at night to hear the ocean. I slept very well

Ship tip

Great Outdoors Buffet for breakfast. The main buffet was too crowded and people were generally rude. Blue Lagoon is open 24 hours. We had late night snacks almost every night. Food was great.

Ports of call

New York, New York

5 out of 5
When you debark at end, there is no place to wait for a ride. The make you cross 12th Ave and wait on the corner.

Port Canaveral, Florida

5 out of 5
Don't plan on waiting in port area to make phone calls, the port area is a secure zone, we had to leave the port to call our family before departing.

Great Stirrup Cay (Cruise Line Private Island), Bahamas

5 out of 5
Just excellent. I wish they had a cruise that just went there.

Nassau, Bahamas

The port area was not nice. Actually had to go 2 blocks inland to get to tourist area. The public beach is on other side of a hotel, quite a walk from the ship.
