Review summary

Previously cruised Carnival and Royal. Decided to try NCL because of the ports and free offers. Booked a mini suite on Escape going to St Thomas, Tortola, Bahamas.

Embarkation - Best experience on any ship

Cabin - Room smaller than Royal. Bathroom in mini suite was fantastic

Overall ship - Beautiful. Beyond noisy! In main dining areas you could not carry on a conversation with the people at your table. I can't emphasize enough how loud it was everywhere you went on the ship. We felt it was more the design of the ship than the amount of people. The different areas on the ship were competing with each other so if you were in the atrium they amped up the mike to be heard on 2 levels from front to back of ship. If someone was performing in a bar or were playing the piano they increased the volume to compete. We have been on many big ships with many people and never had this complaint. It was like when you are with a group and several conversations are going on at once and people will talk louder to be heard and that makes other people talk louder and it gets louder and louder and nobody can be heard. Also, the air filtration was poor. The smell of food and people permeated the ship making the elevators sometimes sickening. Walked the stairs because it took several minutes for an elevator to arrive and many times was already full this was all floors at all times. On this ship the top decks are dedicated to Haven level and activity so not much chance to enjoy the views from high levels. As others have mentioned you can forget swimming in the pool, you are lucky if you can sit in the pool. Only two pools which is not sufficient for this size of ship. There is an adult only area but it does not have a pool.

Food - Have always enjoyed the main dining areas. On Escape the main dining areas were too crowded, tables too close, food was only fair, menu was small, service was slow and cold and hot items were room temperature. Speciality restaurants (we tried three, steak house/habatchi/Brazilian) were exceptional in food and service and you could carry on a conversation. The buffet food was excellent (not our normal choice for every meal), setup superior to Carnival and Royal.

Drinks - only Pepsi products, with normal juice and tea complimentary. Every mixed drink I tried except at the mojoto bar was undrinkable. Wine was good. At first I was thinking the free drink package was a waste until I found the mojoto bar. It was the absolute best, taste and service!!

Disembarkation - Best of all cruises we have taken. We were off in 15 minutes.

Not part of cruise - If you need transportation from Ft Lauderdale to Miami use MJS transportation. They are very reasonable (15 per person or 30 per person if just 2 people) only waited about 10 min, new extremely nice Mercedes vans and they text you continually to keep you posted on arrival!!

Been on RC MSC Carnival and Norwegian going again on October! Carnival Victory was surprise for us(key west,Gozumel) excellent service on all areas nice entertainment cute ship! But MSC Divina the best of all so far❤️Lets hope the best for Escape!

Thank you. We have had nothing but good service on Carnival and have always had a great time, but I admit the food is only mediocre. Is the food better on NCL? I priced a cruise on this ship yesterday and it wasn't much more than CCL, plus they had a special for some freebies like specialty restaurants and wifi! Too bad I already have my other cruise booked. The Escape looks really beautiful.

A lot of people are Carnival fans ,but others like a little more class it is there preference

I've only cruised Carnival, but we are ready to "upgrade." Please tell me how Norweigian is better compared to Carnival. Surprisingly, the cost (other than having to fly to Miami) is about the same.

Lol touche. Well, both places smell but Love the food and atmosphere. My rant was pointed at the other person. Just gets a little exhausting reading reviews where someone bitc**s about the stupidest things. I bet someone will complain that they couldn't find a Pokemon on board lol

I'm pretty sure that's what I said. I am used to the smells. I don't let any of that stuff bother me on a ship. You say its worse over here? And all these years I thought the stranger odors were coming from across the river. Sorry, couldn't pass that up. Just kidding.

I usually just read, but could not help but comment on this. Well You decided to cruise during the the most busiest time of the year. May-aug these ships have everyone and their sister sailing on them because of school and college being out on vacation, errrrrr! So there for, loudness, long lines and lack of A** kissing are expected and limited.Think about it,those workers do and put up with alot, especially during peak time for minimal pay. Think about the Rollercoaster ride these employees are on dealing with due to spoiled, complaining ,ignorant individuals who think they are owed something. If you want to be alone or be catered to ,go on a smaller charter. A cruise ship basically is a floating hotel/ride to a different place which also feeds you unlimited meals, desserts and basic drinks and also entertains you in the meantime. some items are extra but that's normal in the real world. Where else are you gonna get that for the price?? Who goes on a cruise for the pool or water experience anyway!? That's what the ports and Beaches they sail to are for. For the New Yorker you should be used to the smells and thankful for some fresh air mixed in with it lol. I'm from NJ and Love goin to Nyc but have smelled worse there. People should use common sense before complaining about silly stuff and think about the obvious variables that could be causing the negative experience and try to find the positive in it. Shake it off...Reboot and Remember....You're going on Vacation, Not just appointed the next king or Queen Sh*T of Terd Island.

I was cut if but as I was saying the three complimentary dining rooms work out if one kitchen so this is probably why is is a little slow. All in all it was a fantastic cruise, I would do it again.

Ok everyone has an opinion. We found our cruise quite enjoyable. There is so much going on you can always find something to do. Yes, I agree about the noise as I have never been on a cruise that had so many bands, DJ's or performers working at the same time. However, with that being said I didn't find it bothersome. The three complimentary dining rooms work from one kitchen so that may be why

I totally disagree with this review..everyone has their own opinions and experiences..I find it to be wonderful and worth going on again..perhaps that's not the type of cruise for you

Tennisman42282    8 years ago

Trust me..ncl is a great cruiseline..I've sailed on many in the past but ncl is the only one I find worth sailing on..nothing but great experiences with them

That was a nice review. Not nasty like a lot here. Just honest observations. I agree with some of what you say. The quality of the food seems to have gone down a bit in the main dining room since they have the specialty restaurants. I'm not really sure if its true or we just have something else to compare it to now. It's always been a madhouse serving that many people at once and I never thought twice about it. The specialty spots are more one on one , like we're used to at home. personally I don't put much thought into dinner. I usually just want to get it over with and move on but when you're with a person or group you have to go with the flow. The noise, I didn't notice so much but I'm in construction in NYC and whether your in the job or out on the street you're yelling all day. Must be used to it. The smell of food and people made me laugh, though. Did I mention I was in NY? Getting hit with 10 different perfumes and various stages of BO is an every day occurrence. The pool seems to be a common complaint here. I'm not a pool person but my wife and friends never had a problem finding a chair or going in. The percentage of people that use that area every week has to vary a lot. You might have drawn the short straw on that one. Sorry The secret to the elevators on that ship, and I've mentioned it here before, is, the banks of cars are controlled by two sets of buttons. One button does not call all cars. The first set closest to the stairs handles those cars and the buttons further in handle the other cars. Most people press the first set they come to. Use both. Learned that here. Overall, I liked the ship. Going back in September. Don't give up on NCL if you have the chance to use them again. I've only got Carnival and RCL to compare them to and I'll stick with them.
