Review summary

This was our 13th cruise and I was excited about vacationing on a brand new ship for the first time.   Parking and getting on the ship went smooth.

What I liked about our cruise:   Our Room - The Food was great anywhere you ate, water slides were fun, top brand spirits included in the drink package, and the staff was very friendly.  The casino was very nice and one of the best paying casinos I have experienced in a long time.  You could actually play on the machines for awhile and win some money.

What I didn't like:  The design of the ship floors and especially the pool area.  The pool area was way too small and crowded for the amount of passengers on board.  It  really grossed me out to even want to get in the pool or hot tubs with so many people in them all the time.  Every chair on the deck was right up against another chair no room in between them it's so crowded. The TV monitors were on the sides so you couldn't see the screen unless you were in the pool or cranking your head to one side sitting in one of the front chairs on the side of the pool.  My husband and I had to stay on the ship on a island day to be able to enjoy the pool and hot tub.

The decor of the ship is gloomy - gray and black - What?  The main theater is all black no color, looks like it's needs remodeling.

Specialty Restaurant Reservations:  Total frustration when it came to making reservations at the specialty restaurants.  We starting making our reservations immediately when we got on board.  The majority of times left for most all the restaurants was from 9pm on and some days were not available.   After day one forget about changing a time or making a new reservation.  It was like being at work trying to juggle the schedule for the week with restaurants and shows.

We won't be back on the Escape because you can't relax and enjoy the pool area and booking reservations for the week was not freestyle cruising at all.  The NCL cruise we went on before was much better and did not make you reserve restaurants and shows.

NCL get rid of the reservations and redesign your ship's pool area.  Make your casino smoke free - we don't want to play in the smoke and we don't want to walk through it.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

The food and service was very good. The reservation process was frustrating

Onboard Activities

1 out of 5
Not much of a schedule for onboard activities.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
We really liked the comedians and the two shows we saw were very good.

Service and Staff

Ship Quality

1 out of 5
Ship was very clean, but the design is gloomy and pool area is way too small for the amount of passengers

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Very nice - we had a suite so got the bigger bathroom which was a huge plus.

Ship tip

If you want to enjoy the pool and hot tubs don't go on this ship. All the specialty restaurants are reservation only. Good luck getting a decent reservation.

Your welcome for the videos - I had to video this pool area because I just could not believe it with my own eyes. A brand new ship - What were they thinking?

The pool looks way to small and to walled in,  no open space around pool on pool deck.  I also do not like having to make reservations weeks before my cruise to get the dining time I want and where I want to eat or what shows I want to see.    how do you know in advance what night your in the mood for a show, steak house or Sushi ???

I'll stick to mid size ships where you can get a spot at the pool and a table to eat at.

P.S.  thanks for the video it says more then words could to describe the poor lay out and size of the pool area.

Thanks for the review, i enjoyed the videos. we will be sailing on the Epic next year, will be our first mega ship. I will start looking at making reservations before we get on the ship.

Looks like they took the pool deck from a 2500 passenger ship and just dropped it onto a 4000 passenger ship with no consideration for proportions

We plan on going back to Royal for the next cruise as they seem to have plenty of space at the pools and hot tubs.  I notice some of the 5 star comments don't look to be real people when you click on their picture.

Thank you for posting your review. As we've learned, not every voyage is going to be aces.  It is interesting that we stay away from the mega-ships for the exact reasons you found problematic.  Better luck on your next trip!

Yeah, the pool area is small. On a at-sea day the pool deck can end up jammed packed.  You have to go scouting for lounge chairs well before you plan on laying out. However, the Champagne Catamaran trip looked really nice.

Sorry it was so crummy! Was that the only pool area?? It did seem crowded. That is why I like the solarium with RC. It gives another option than the main area. Was this your first time with NCL? Hopefully it won't deter you from cruising more.
