Review summary

This was my first cruise, and after the trip I'd say it didn't live up to the hype.  Other than the ship being new and beautiful I wasn't impressed with the service, food, or availability of entertainment.

Ship:

The ship itself is pretty amazing.  Everything is shiny and new and is top notch on style and quality.  Bathrooms were pretty small in terms of how many people could use them at once (leading to waiting or heading back to the room) and placement wasn't always ideal (sometimes a far walk to find one).  Most things are relatively easy to find but there were a few that you had to walk around before finding.

Pool:

Pool was always packed and finding a chair took some time.  There was always music or activities at the pool which made things interesting and fun.  Pool bars are always packed so head to the bar prior to finishing your drink.  Supposedly they put pool towels in your room but we never had any, had to check towels in/out every day which was slightly annoying.

Room:

Had an interior stateroom and it was nice.  The bed took up pretty much all the room, but being in bed is 95% of the time spent in the room.  Bathroom was adequate and shower had great water pressure.  We didn't get any towel animals in our room until we asked about it on day 5.  Seems trivial but what's the deal?

Dining:

The buffet was always packed (like everything else) and sometimes it took two trips around the room to find an adequate table.  Selection was good but food was nothing special, typical buffet style food.  There was a seafood night the second night which we had no idea about until after it was over.  Would have loved to enjoyed the seafood buffet and was highly upset it was better posted or announced.

the main dining rooms were very nice, but the service was poor.  Always waiting extended times for drink, placing orders, and even bread/butter.  On one day we waiting about 15-20 minutes for our waiter just to place a drink order (gave us water and disappeared).  Menu was decent but the "special" every day was some form of steak.  would have loved to see more seafood options on the menu.  I was told from others that cruised before that things like lobster were offered as part of the dining experience, but this was extra.  $20 isn't a horrible price for 1 and a half pounds of lobster, but it isn't great either.  Portions were small so had to order multiple items to get a good fill.

Drinks:

Drink were well mixed most of the time, I recommend finding a bartender that makes drinks to your liking and sticking with that guy/girl.  The pourhouse was very nice and had a great selection of beers, even got to watch some football while on board here!  Places like the wine bar and mojito bar aren't included in the drink package, and also don't honor the price minus $15 as stated in the drink package.  I believe the mojito bar was 20% off the price if you have the drink package, so expect to pay $10 or so for a mojito.

Shows:

The shows in the atrium were excellent.  They were very entertaining and funny, but good luck getting a seat.  We showed up an hour early to the show we wanted to see and couldn't get a seat.  Caught one of the comedy shows and it was funny.  The duelling piano bar is a lot of fun, but you hear the same songs being played night after night.  The piano team were great entertainment though.

Excursions:

We booked an shopping and beach excursion for St. Thomas and stood outside the ship for an hour before finding out the beach was closed and excursion cancelled.  You don't get that much time in port, so this sucked.  Ended up booking the Kon Tiki party boat which was a lot of fun, but alcohol is extra!  Took this to honeymoon beach which was so pretty, an hour or so there just wasn't enough.

Dolphin experience in Tortola was amazing.  Had a great time and they were extremely helpful with planning a proposal to my now fiance.  Even without this it was a blast and highly recommended.

Nassau was okay, wasn't too impressed.  Rented a scooter to cruise around the island which was nice so we could see what we wanted and stop where we wanted.

Staff:

Overall okay.  They don't go out of their way to make your trip extra enjoyable.  As mentioned in the dining rooms service is not great.  Bartenders are attentive for the amount of drinks they serve but don't expect extra hospitality.  Pool and main areas have 1 or 2 waiters walking around at a given time.  Only one seemed good (nannete who server the pool and atrium) and she was great!  If they were all that good it would have been a better experience.

Final thoughts:

As the title says, good but not great.  Since this was my first cruise I don't have a lot to compare to, but from the other experienced cruisers I know this cruise fell short.

Nannette was awesome! We loved her too! Just to clarify drinks at sugarcane and at the wine bar are definitely included in the UBP as long as they are under the $15 each limit. All the mojitos were, except the flights. We drank there everyday and loved Marcos and Bong. Sorry to hear you missed out on these bars and was misinformed. Raspberry guava was the best!

I for one am tired of it.you were not involved in this and it's long over now ENOUGH..

lauren45    8 years ago

Yeah jdukette "no more pot stirring" seriously? Stop acting like its a fact that this is a bad ship. It is having issues and everyone gets that, please leave it alone. No one wants to continue getting notifications on this thread.

tennisman1982    8 years ago

I never said anything about stars..end it at that please and no more on this topic

cruisincouple06    8 years ago

who cares about lower marks....it's mainly all opinions ....if u don't like it that's fine of others do that's fine...what's the big deal...

jdukette    8 years ago

Ok no more pot stirring 😎

jdukette    8 years ago

Tennisman1982: The star rating is a joke. People were giving 5 star reviews before the ship set sail. Thus making it inaccurate. If you look at the reviews after it set sail you will notice that there are more lower marks. These are the facts.

tennisman1982    8 years ago

ty jdukette but the silly argument is over and it is best to not stir it up :)

jdukette    8 years ago

This app was designed to give your opinion on your experience and post review. It was not designed for people to criticize other people's reviews and opinions. If you had a great time that's awesome. We want to hear about that. If you had a bad time. We want to hear about that so we can possibly avoid that. Take the good with the bad.

jdukette    8 years ago

Here are the facts. The balcony doors are junk they crack and pop all night in moderate seas. If you don't make all your reservations way before you set sail you might not get into places you want. Drinks/food are not being served in a timely manner due to the staffing issues aboard. The is not a dedicated dance club. Deck space around the pools are inadequate. No ship pins were given out.

tennisman1982    8 years ago

tootie enough now..let it go,it's over

tootie60    8 years ago

I never said I had a bad time. that was your opinion

tennisman1982    8 years ago

it should have been over long ago and I 2nd Lauren45 comment :)

lauren45    8 years ago

I'd like to personally apologize to everyone not involved in this silly little argument, who keeps getting notifications!!! It's over now 😂

lauren45    8 years ago

I think you've missed the point. We're not bashing anyone just for complaining. You went out of your way to tell someone they were wrong in trying to defend this ship. I can feel the sarcasm when you say "keep enjoying the reviews", which is just downright rude. Sorry you had a bad time, we get it... Just don't make others feel like they will be wasting their money on this ship, thats your opinion

cruisincouple06    8 years ago

I 2nd that....we sure will enjoy the cruise and all the opinions

tennisman1982    8 years ago

we will and we will have a wonderful time

tootie60    8 years ago

Doesn't matter to me anymore, I've been on the ship. Hope you all have a nice cruise and keep enjoying the reviews!

tennisman1982    8 years ago

that was shocking..especially from the same person who previously said fact..hahahaha..hence the troll caught in trolling

cruisincouple06    8 years ago

hahaha....tootie I'm impressed u actually used "opinion" in a post....I'm very proud of u

tennisman1982    8 years ago

tootie stop typing..you clearly have 0 credibility

tootie60    8 years ago

Obviously you have not read my reviews. I NEVER complained about towel animals or service. I gave my opinion on all the specialty restaurants with only one not being good. If someone wants to complain about everything they have the right to just like the ones that love everything. I paid good money to be on the ship and expect the level of service they advertise. Maybe that doesn't matter to you but that's your opinion.

tennisman1982    8 years ago

well said cruisingluvcouple

cruisincouple06    8 years ago

Tootie only troll is u.....jus like earlier posts with u....u jus run at the mouth...or more like b tough behind a screen and u thnk u know it all....hahahaha oh but we all know the truth to that don't we lil tootie

tennisman1982    8 years ago

thank you..finally someone else who shares the same point I am trying to make..ty lauren45

lauren45    8 years ago

You have a horrible attitude. You don't need to go around telling everyone to wait and see what a horrible time they will have. YOU had a bad experience. It is not a FACT that this is a bad ship. They have plenty of things they need to improve on, sure, but my god.. Try to be a more pleasant person lol

cruisincouple06    8 years ago

yea really.....next we will here bitching cause the ice cream was to cold

lauren45    8 years ago

She seems like the kind of person to complain about not having towel animals! 😂 But really, you're right, people need to stop writing their reviews like they are FACT. People say that the food is "horrible"? Well, literally everything I ate on this ship was the best I've ever had. I was on a business trip on this ship, but the service, food, and beauty of this ship made me not want to go home!!

cruisincouple06    8 years ago

don't worry tennisman1982 I and many others agree with u totally....tootie is always on here running at the mouth and thinks there OPINION is a fact...hahaha guess they don't know the difference

lauren45    8 years ago

$5 per game per person for bowling**

lauren45    8 years ago

Tennisman I agree with you 100%... Although I do think there's a lot of extra charges on this ship that are total bs... Like $5 per game per person, charging for vibe beach club, etc. either way, this ship is fantastic and the food is fantastic and the crew will always do what they can to keep guests happy. Let's just hope they get some more staff in the near future

lauren45    8 years ago

Tootie you really don't need to say that all of the future reviews will be bad and upset future sailers... Give this ship some time and guest experiences will change. This ship is wonderful but it definitely needs a few kinks straightened out, like their issue with understaffing. I am sure NCL will not let hundreds of thousands of dollars go to waste and not improve the problems with this ship

tennisman1982    8 years ago

I'm sick and tired of people coming on here ranting..stop sailing on new ships and complaining..it's new and there is going to be issues..state all the opinions ypu want...they mean NOTHING

tennisman1982    8 years ago

I've read all I need to read..seen all I need to see and I have had more then enough experience with ncl to know I will enjoy it..

gazzi25    8 years ago

Well, we shall see. It definitely will be interesting. What we liked with RCL: the cocktails were amazing and great quality, the food in the inklusive restaurants were outstanding and on the Allure a week was not long enough, we didn't want to go to bed because there was so much going on. But they have restaurants you have to pay for as well as lots of other things with can add up just as quick. We got a really got price for the Escape with the ultimate drink package. We have booked the three day restaurants package and it's actually cheaper as with RCL. I just hope that the food and cocktails will be good and not to many kids everywhere. Nothing against kids, but as we don't have any yet we would like to enjoy our holiday without lots of crazy unbehaved kids. I will definitely write my review on here once we back.

tennisman1982    8 years ago

my point is..the experiences people have on the ship are opinions only..not facts

tootie60    8 years ago

Ha, ha you have to like it. Sept 2016 is a long ways away and a lot more reviews to read that will upset you even more.

lauren45    8 years ago

I have sailed on this ship as well (although it was a sailing with no actual guests, before it left the building port in Germany) and I have to say that the ship is absolutely jaw dropping. The crew I experienced were nothing short of fantastic. That being said there were not 4000 guests on board, so they were not overwhelmed. That seems to be the ONLY FACTUAL issue on this ship, is understaffing.

tennisman1982    8 years ago

No you have opinion not facts..I've seen many more positive reviews then negative..you don't like the escape..fine but your comments are your opinion not fact, from what I have read other then your negative (opinions) the escape is a decent ship..you have your opinion on it and I have mine..if you don't like the ship then sail on a smaller ship but I know I will like it...

tootie60    8 years ago

I have my facts thank you. I've sailed on this ship you should comment once you have experienced it yourself.

tennisman1982    8 years ago

You don't seem to understand that new ships are going to have things that need to be worked out in its early sailing..I believe that there may be some issues on board but that is to be expected..if you don't like it then you really should wait about 6 monthes before sailing

tennisman1982    8 years ago

No I will comment now..there are many saying it's good and fyi..I've cruised with ncl for many many years ald ALWAYS have good experiences..so get your facts straight before YOU comment

tootie60    8 years ago

Wait till you get on this ship before you give your opinion. We were with another couple who are loyal NCL cruisers (platinum)and they were very disappointed and gave it a poor rating. They said none of the other ships are like the escape.

tennisman1982    8 years ago

There is no nickel and diming..you need to learn how to stretch your dollar and royal carribean is far more expensive

tennisman1982    8 years ago

it's still new besides many are giving good reviews..this may not be the right ship for you, there are others in ncl that may be more fitting to your cruising style

tootie60    8 years ago

gazzi25. s Stick with Royal Carribean. With all the nickel and diming they do on this ship, you will probably end up spending that much more. Seems like a lot of things that were free or part of the drink package when we went week of Thanksgiving are no more. BTW, we had 5 towel animal nights. lol

cruisincouple06    8 years ago

towel animals....really that's a complaint?? Omg people the things that get complained about ...I could understand towel animals for the kids , but reading reviews where adults are complaining they didn't have towel animals in there room...hahaha I've heard it all now

gazzi25    8 years ago

Our first cruise was with the Allure of the Seas with Royal Caribbean last year in May, it was so amazing we went on the Adventure of the Seas this year in May.After that we were going to the Oasis of the Seas, but my husband ended up in hospital and we had to cancel it :-( Now we going on the Escape in January. I really wanted to go on the Oasis again but it was a price difference from 800 € to the Escape that's why we book the Escape. After reading all this bad reviews I'm not sure if it was a good decision but I expect the worth now. We loved cruising on the Royal Caribbean, specialy the Allure, it was absolutely amazing!

kb1313    8 years ago

That's weird we got towel animals after the second day. We had two pool towels in our room and did have to ask for three.

lauren45    8 years ago

I would recommend a much smaller ship, especially for your first cruise. It's much less chaotic and overwhelming. Also, I would recommend Royal Caribbean! I've been hearing so many people talk about NCL falling short lately. You'll get outstanding service and have a better time on a ship that has their shit together, it seems that escape still has a lot of kinks to work out!

jdukette    8 years ago

Please don't give up on cruising. NCL has gone down since it became a publicity traded company. I cruised with NCL before the I.P.O. And it was amazing. I recommend you choose another line for your 2nd cruise. This ship and company is not what cruising is about. Nickel and dimming guests is not the norm.

juliemould    8 years ago

which cruise was it u when on.
