So, your entire cruise was ruined because you couldn't smoke ?   FFS suck on a toothpick or something.  Chew Nicorette, chew a patch........I'm reasonably sure having all you cigarette smokers in the cigar lounge, was no thrill for the cigar smokers either.  Cigars smell good.  Most pipe tobaccos smell good.   Cigarettes, not so much.     Did you really expect NCL would accommodate you ?   No cruise line would.  

I will be on the Breeze in April, and I am looking forward to it, despite your 1 star rating.    On April 30th, I will write an honest review of her.

The Paradise was ahead of its' time. I suspect a similar test today would do well.

It is unfortunate that your cruise did not live up to your expectation. A couple thoughts come to mind...

- weather is not something under the control of the cruise lines. I am sure they wish it was... but unfortunately, it is not. Not sure how much of that factored into your overall rating.

- If you knew that smoking was extremely restricted prior to the cruise, why book on that line to being with?  

As others pointed out, smoking is a volatile issue. As someone who can not tolerate secondhand smoke for medical reasons, I am thankful for responsible restriction of cruise ship space in favor of a more healthful environment because unfortunately, it's not as if I can opt not to breath similar to the way I opt not to eat something full of sugar.

I smoke a pipe and have been on many cruises.  Every ship I sailed on had a number of designated areas for smoking.  Many had "cigar lounges" that were open all night with an assortment of cordials, tv, and comfortable seating.  All of them had smoking areas near the pools and near some bars.

Can't smoke on your balcony, but sometimes, late at night, I would break the rule, but trying not to bother my neighbors.

Overall, not a problem if you're not a chain smoker.

I smoked cigarettes for 47 years despite several attempts to quit. In 2011, 2012 and the spring of 2013 i went on cruise holidays that were 24, 32 and 37 days from the time I left home till the time I got back. In all instances I didn't smoke between leaving and entering the front door of my house. Every time I returned to a partial pack of smokes on my desk. I fought the desire to have a smoke for a week to ten days but ultimately lost my resolve. We took a 30 day cruise to Hawaii and the Solomon Islands over Christmas and New Years 2013/14 spending a night in San Diego before and after. This time my last smoke was one i bummed from my daughter before she drove us to the airport - no partial pack left behind, I will have been a non-smoker for two years on December 15. Now, I cannot stand the stench of second hand smoke so I stay clear of the smoking areas aboard ship. I do think there will come a day when cruise lines will follow the lead of all other modes of travel and the hospitality industry.

Let me know how that goes for you. On my last Cruise I boarded as a non smoker, but after a night of drinking with a bunch of smokers I picked it up again. Next cruise to Alaska will be with a more supportive group..

God willing, our cruise in January will be my first as a non-smoker. I really haven't had issues in the past finding a place to smoke (Carnival Sunshine, Norwegian Breakaway). I am one that has been accustomed to smoking outside year round, rain or shine. Some of that comes with not wanting to expose my family to my second hand smoke out of courtesy and concern for them. I have no problem with the cruise lines restricting smokers to designated areas, regardless of how small they may be.

I believe Carnival tried a non-smoking ship using the Paradise as testing grounds some years ago. FAILED!

Some of you know that I recently quit smoking (again)... 4 months..... The funds saved by not smoking will be going to pay for cruises. Now being a smoker on the cruises I've been on and now trying another as a non smoker, I can and will probably see both sides a bit differently than some. As a smoker I drank and played the machines in the casino. As a not smoker I drink and play the machines in the casino. Maybe attitude s should change a bit for all concerned and thing can get easier.

I don't think its completely ridiculous for a cruise company to make one ship out of their fleet smoke free. Although yes smokers do bring money to the casinos there are many non smokers that won't go to the casino because of the smoke.

I do agree with you that the area should be cleaned when the smoking area closes for the night. Does it ever close?   Or is it just the bar service that closes?  The cleaning needs to be addressed.  There also has to be better ventilation.  

Cruise lines probably will never go completely smoke free.  Smokers bring money to the cruise line.  They are more likely to spend money on drinks and in the casinos.

 Smoking is such a volatile issue.  There are very strong feelings on both sides.  We all need to be respectful when expressing our feelings.

I really don't think that writing to NCL before a cruise complaining about smoking issues will have any effect. Mrs Lopez is probably doing her best to answer questions but I doubt if she has the authority to change the smoking policy. I would suggest you contact you Frank or possibly look for a cruise line that allows smoking. (If there is any)

Every public accommodation in the Western World has decided that 1) They can get along without smokers, and, 2) They just can't tolerate the constant complaining and whining of non-smokers.

So, you now know what it's like to be in a minority.  It's called "the tyranny of the majority."  Right or wrong, NCL has decided they can do without us.  Soon,  there will be ENTIRELY smoke-free cruise ships.  They just don't care.
