Review summary
I have cruised with Norwegian a few times and have always enjoyed their cruises. It's not that I didn't enjoy the cruise, it just didn't meet my expectations. The ship is easy to navigate and I loved the hallways being broken up with twists and turns so that you just don't see a LONG hallway, but the interior is just too dark and low ceilings. It was a bit claustrophobic. The balcony room was average, the balcony itself seemed larger than most we have been on. The bed, unfortunately was very uncomfortable. Though our room server was Fantastic!! She looked for a "thinner" pillow for me and found one - all the pillows are those big fluffy ones. All the crew were fantastic! The bathroom situation was different on this ship where the shower, toilet and sink areas were all separate. The toilet and shower stalls had frosted glass doors so privacy was a bit of an issue. There was a large curtain that portioned off the area from the rest of the room, but it was a bit uncomfortable. The casino was the largest I have ever seen on a ship! It took up the whole 6th floor. Gambling and casino's are not my thing so I stay away from that area but on this ship, that was hard to do. The 5th floor was the Atrium where demos, games, movies were shared with the cruisers, but the noise from the casino was almost deafening making it hard to hear. There was a 24 hour eatery on the 6th floor, but it was always so jammed packed and noisy from the casino that we could not get a seat. The food was fantastic! From the buffet to the speciality restaurant - it was all very good. A nice variety, fresh and tasty. When I booked the cruise I received the package for free gratuities and speciality dining. When I got to the ship to sign up for our speciality dining package, I found out that it was for only 3 restaurants. The last Norwegian ship we were on, we could use the package for every night we were on the ship. So that was disappointing. Also, the website states that there is a Chef's Table option that you can sign up for after getting on the ship that is an extra cost and my husband and I were looking forward to this(have done this on other ships and it is a blast!) but we found out that this is no longer offered on the Epic. That was a big disappointment for us. Another issue was the need to "book a reservation" to go to the shows! I have never run into this before. We missed a couple of shows because when we went to book, it was full. The port stops were fine. The Madra Spa was fantastic - especially the thermal baths. Overall I would say the cruise was good, but not fantastic. Though, this does not deter me from traveling on Norweigian again. We have always enjoyed Norwegian, it just means that the Epic was not our thing.
