Review summary

Post-Pandemic Norwegian is hurting. Service was severely lacking. Most people we talked to on the boat said they will be looking at a different cruise line next time, our family included.

Embarkation

Getting on the boat itself was easy. Had significant issues parking at the Miami port. We arrived at noon and there were zero parking spaces at the Norwegian Terminal despite the fact the attendants were letting all cars in. We left terminal B for terminal C and there were only a handful of spaces left (at noon!) and we got one of the last spaces. I don't know what would have happened if we arrived even 15 minutes later because it was a zoo. We had to lug our bag over to terminal B and everything was smooth from there.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

2 out of 5
We had 4 people in our party of 9 with food allergies (3 were gluten free and 1 had a tree nut allergy). We called Norwegian more than 30 days in advance to add that to our accounts. Unfortunately, no one on the actual cruise was aware of our allergies and we felt like a huge inconvenience. This was sharply different than the Norwegian Breakaway cruise I went on a year ago where food allergies were taken care of very well. For breakfasts in the Garden Cafe, we had to ask for gluten free items and it took an average of 30 minutes to get them. Sometimes we never got what was asked for (GF bagel or muffin). Each dinner took 2.5 to 3 hours to serve our party of 9. I have no idea why! It got to be comical, except for the fact we couldn't see any shows because the dinners were so long. We ordered GF items off the menu and didn't make any weird requests. (Note: the menu items for all meals were identical to the Breakaway a year ago). Had some frustrating moments where there were zero items we could eat one night on the starters menu and the servers had no idea what to do. On a positive note (or negative depending on how you look at it), our 19 year old was able to order wine and drinks galore at all the dinners. No one carded him, lol.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
The pool was nice but extremely small. Our favorite place was the observation lounge on deck 15. It was so beautiful and quiet. Perfect place for a drink and to hang out with our family. Loved it. Bingo was a ton of fun as well. Most activities like the Speedway and waterslides never seemed to be open while we were there.

Observation Lounge

5 out of 5

We loved this lounge. It's a wonderful and quiet place to sit and watch the views.

Entertainment

Unable to go to shows because our dinners were 2.5-3 hours long.

Service and Staff

Servers were noticeably confused and annoyed we had food allergies with the exception of one or two. We thought our room steward was excellent until we had a few items missing at the end. Some makeup was missing and my bag of covid tests and thermometer between the 2 rooms we had. Guest Services, Shore Excursions, Onboard Credit and Internet Cafe service was all really disappointing. On this cruise we did not go to any of the original ports of call and all of our prepaid excursions were refunded. However, they were not automatically refunded to my credit card. We had to physically go wait in line an hour. Got to the front of the line and they said there was an issue with my credit card (there wasn't) and I had to come back the NEXT day and get cash back. That took another hour. Shore Excursions: We had an awful time with the last minute shore excursion in Jamaica (Cooking class and beach). I went to ask for a refund because it was so awful and people were having medical issues with the conditions and they only gave me 30% back when the rest of my family did this "excursion" for free. Better than nothing, but it made the $25/person credit they gave to everyone on the ship because we didn't go to any ports planned sting a little more. Everything felt so stingy. On the last day I spent about 4 hours in lines taking care of mistakes on my bill. So did everyone else. When I got in line at the internet cafe because of wrong charges (this was the second time I had to do this), there was a riot about to happen because people had been waiting in line over 2 hours trying to fix things. It was bad. My bill got sort of fixed, they had overcharged by $75 and gave a small credit because the premium streaming wifi did not work the entire time. In fact, no wifi worked for anyone at all the last day. TL;DR This cruise made me feel like Norwegian was about to go into bankruptcy. Everything about the ship seemed stressed.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Very clean. No issues. However, the ship's design was almost identical to the Breakaway. The observation lounge was amazing though.

Cabin / Stateroom

Cabin was beautiful, clean, lovely. Perfect balcony. Very comfortable beds and came with the extension cord requested for a cpap machine. Very hot water showers were a plus.

Ports of call

Miami, Florida

Stayed at Aloft Hotel - Brickell and it was amazing. We loved that area and would visit again.

Great Stirrup Cay (Cruise Line Private Island), Bahamas Did not visit port

Our ship docked in Nassau instead. We were told it was because there was too much of a swell to tender to the private island. Nassau was okay, but we weren't able to do any excursions there. Just did some shopping.

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic Did not visit port

They sent us to Ocho Rios, Jamaica instead "due to unforeseen circumstances" that were never disclosed to passengers. We were able to book a last minute excursion (Jamaican Cooking Class and Beach), which ended up being the worst excursion I've ever been on in my life. Unsanitary (they ran out of gloves), in the full sun, no water was ever served in 4 hours, public beach (it was advertised as private), no beach chairs, and to top it off, my family who was not part of the excursion was able to walk to the venue and do everything we did FOR FREE. The only thing they couldn't do was eat the unsanitary food that was cooked for us, but I couldn't eat it either because there was no water or knives or napkins. We paid $500 for 5 people.

Disembarkation

Took about 45 minutes to get off the boat. I was pulled out of line for "finances." No idea why because when I went to the finance table there were no issues. Pulled out of line again because my face didn't register for customs. Went to another line and everything was fine.

Sailed on Joy, Escape, and Prima this year. Great service on all 3. No major issues.

It seems that the cutbacks in staffing are permanent, not just an issue where they cannot hire enough people.
