Review summary

Cruising seems to be for those who like to eat and watch shows or gamble. When I go somewhere I want to be able to easily enjoy it without a battle. The majority of people were 18 and trying to hook up or 50-70 and trying to eat as much as possible is 7 days.

Embarkation

I'm rating 2 stars for the 2 good things. The shows were good and our room cleaner was always happy and friendly as well as some of the staff. However, this was a total waste of a vacation. Friday we set off and were totally optimistic with an open mind. The food was mediocre but understandable seeing the few chefs preparing thousands of meals per day. At the restaurants you order everything all at once. There's no coming back to your table after a few minutes to check as there are just too many people and not enough staff. They're not working for tips so most of them don't really try. Understandable. They are on the ship for 6-8 months at a time. Prepare to spend a lot of time in the bathroom. Prepare to dodge groups of pushy gluttons fighting their way through the buffet. You're lucky if you can find a table for 4 in the garden cafe. Don't bother trying to get a deck chair either after 8am. It's completely packed with towels and bags of people not even sitting in the chair. The bands play the same songs every day and the food is always the same. Cups and straws float around from drunks spilling their drinks. A hot tub for 6could be filled with 12 people at a time. After a day it gets sickening. Wednesday was the white party which we were excited about. We went to the shops and then we got all dressed up and were dancing away when we went to get a drink and were shut off. Shut off from the beverage package that we ALREADY PAID FOR. We went to the front desk, spent about an hour calling our bank and arguing with the staff that there was no problem with the card. The problem was the $28.95 pending charge from the shop. This happened to numerous people. See, they didn't get their money immediately so they took away something we already paid for. This completely ruined our night and I thought I should have been reimbursed for the day I didn't get to use my beverages that I paid for. The next day we spent another hour waiting for management to come and talk to us. He said this was their way of "getting our attention". They shut off your $600 booze package to get your attention. He offered no apology, no make up. Not even an offer of a bottle of wine or a dinner. I'm not looking for anything for free but I want to be reimbursed for what I already paid for. He was totally rude and brushed us off and said someone else would talk to us. We received a letter on our door when we came back at midnight on the last night. At that point, what could they do? Tuesday morning I called to say that our shower nozzle wasn't working so the water was scalding hot. Wednesday morning there was still no fix so I called again. Someone fixed it but it broke again on Wednesday so the water was freezing. Again I called and again he fixed it. Wednesday I thought I'd try my luck at a slot tourney. I asked what it was about and the lady just quickly told me to sign up and talk later. She said I'd be in the second round. The second and third round came and went without my name called so I had to scream to get her attention as she wanted to ignore me. Finally she went back to check and sure enough they forgot to write my name down and forgot about me. Had I not spoken up I'd have wasted my money yet again. I think it was Wednesday the a/c broke on the ship and everything was dripping wet from sweating. Top that off with people in close quarters heavily packed on the pounds and it's a smelly sauna. It was only a couple hours but in that time I think something died outside of the lobby area...it smelled like a sewer backup on times square. The kiddie pool area was fun for our 6 and 10 year old but again, was overcrowded with unsupervised and ignorant parents letting the older kids cut and push the little ones. Splash academy was fun and the circus at the end was cute. Bermuda itself was beautiful but hard to get around if you don't time it right. We got off the ship and waited about 30min in the bus ticket line before someone came up to us and said shuttles for $7/pp. At this point we were ready to just get somewhere. We got in shuttle and a guy said $40 (4 of us/6 seats). We said he told us $7pp when we were in line and another couple offered to split it with us. Perfect-6seats divided by $40 was about $7pp. The driver told the other couple that we wanted to ride alone. They asked how much if we shared and he said "get in the cab or get out" they asked again how much$ and he repeated. We couldn't get out of that can fast enough. Be careful not to get scammed. Blue Hole Park was amazing, Horseshoe Bay as well. Crystal Caves a waste of money. Captain Jack's pirate ship was a ton of fun and the rum swizzles are awesome. If you want to get to Bermuda don't do it on the Norwegian Dawn.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

1 out of 5
Overcrowded

Onboard Activities

1 out of 5
Pool overcrowded. Gym not crowded at all. Get to shows early or you don't get a seat. Splash academy was great for the kids.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Acrobatic performance was great. Elements and the magician were awesome. The comedians were funny. Again overcrowded and nowhere to sit in Bliss lounge.

Children's Programs

1 out of 5
Kids club was fun for our kids.

Service and Staff

2 out of 5
Management and front desk was awful. Waiters come to take your order all at once and don't come back until you are done eating. Our room steward was great. The servers were great when we paid at Los Lobos.

Ship Quality

2 out of 5
Nothing is convenient to get to. Impossible to find Venetian. Pool is too small. Buffet doesn't have enough seating. The staff was always quick to clean a table the moment it did become available.

Cabin / Stateroom

2 out of 5
Overall decent size but our shower was broken for 3 of the days. Can hear your neighbors whisper.

Ship tip

Just don't. It's too small for the amount of people they pack on. They are always trying to make more money. You're constantly fighting for a seat somewhere or trying to squeeze in the pool or overcrowded hot tubs. If you want to see great shows and eat good food just fly to an all inclusive resort. The food and staff are only above average if you're paying.

Ports of call

Boston, Massachusetts

4 out of 5
Quick and easy to get thru

Royal Naval Dockyard, West End, Bermuda

1 out of 5
Long lines to get transportation. Scammer cab drivers

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
Confusing but quick

I am 51 to be exact. Let's see, my mornings started by using the jogging track followed by a delicious breakfast. Yes, we enjoyed plenty of shows which is no different from when I go to concerts in Boston, the movies, or a theatre show. I eat what I want regardless of where I am, I don't need a ship to do that but funny....I am STILL able to wear a two piece (oh no! Is that ok with you because I'm over 50?). To continue, my excursions in Bermuda consisted of horseback riding, the mountain bike & hike and jet skiing not once, but twice and a day of swimming in Horseshoe Bay. I did hook up (as you say) quite often with my husband as well so you can take your ignorant insults, stay off the seas, take a good look in the mirror and realize there's more to life than insulting people that are on this app to share experiences. Have a good night and do yourself a favor.... stay on land and do more research before you travel.

Jusme, I find that the food in the MDR'S on NCL ships is fantastic. Pool hogs are on every cruise line you go on, and if pointed out to an employee-they put a sticker with the time on the chair and if no one is there within a certain amount of time, that chair goes up for grabs. Me, I found nothing wrong with the customer service when I needed it. Or cabin steward was fantastic, or room was always cleaned, with a full ice bucket. Yes, unfortunately you can get poor customer service, but that can happen on any cruise line also. All in all, I have had no problems with NCL on the 3 cruises I've had with them and an looking forward to the Dawn in October.

NCL is our preferred cruise line. I like their "freestyle" way of cruising. Just like anything, cruising will be as much fun as you allow it to be. If you only want to see the negative, you'll be sure to find it. I prefer to find the positive and I've enjoyed everyone of my cruises. We've cruised with kids, we've cruised with just other couples. We've done a no kids cruise for ourselves. Had a blast every time. It's vacation. Sit back and relax and stop worrying what everyone else around you is going. If they want to pull up chairs at the buffet, let em. It's their vacation too.

JusMe, NCL is an excellent line. The food in the MDR's are awesome. As far as poor customer service, that can happen anywhere and on any cruise line.

JusMe    7 years ago

Thank you for your review. I have to agree that on NCL you do have to pay extra to get good food as the MDR food is not good and service is worse then the food. I have noticed once NCL gets you on the ship and has your $$$ then customer service stops. As far as the cabin size, pool crowding (chair hogs) not a lot of tables in the buffet.... that is all just part of sharing a ship with 3000 new friends. For food quality, dining room service and customer service I'd suggest you try a better cruise line. IMHO NCL is the worst of the major lines. I'd suggest one of the new Mega ships by RCI, your kids will love everything they have to do on a mega ship. Or cruising may not be for your family, it is different kind of vacation then land based vacations.

Mommylake, your review is very stereotypical and so not true. I've cruised 20+ times and gearing up for #21 in 15 days, and I neither hook up nor eat like a pig. Cruising is definitely not for everyone. But for those of us who are cruise addicts, it is the most relaxing and freeing vacation in the universe. Hopefully you'll find a vacation that brings peace to your life.

GIL155    7 years ago

Lol- you could be correct for many cruisers. I am sure there are one or two other main types also. Then those that fit into no catagory. Lots of cruisers, lots of types. (makes things more interesting to observe at sea- I think).

Summerholiday    7 years ago

Strange you putting everyone in the same category we love to cruise and find that not dragging your case around is a bonus have had our 18 cruise it's very relaxing and do whatever you choose to do .. there is only so much food one can eat and we find light lunch and then enjoy dinner in the dinning room .. so not everyone pigs out i suggest you stick to flying and stay away from people who choose to enjoy themselves and cruse 75 days until we leave Australia for our next adventure!!! Happy flying

my guess is you would be happier on a vacation that is not a cruise.

Thank you for info 😃

Escape is newer, but not by much. Also bigger, with a few more bars, restaurants. I think the same number of slides, but the ropes course is two levels.

Froggylein    7 years ago

I'm booked on the Breakaway in January from NYC. Is there a difference between the Escape and Breakaway like size of ship, interior age etc?

Kathy717    7 years ago

The Escape is coming to NYC next year! I can't wait! Another trip to Bermuda most likely, but I really want to go on the ship!

HalfHand    7 years ago

I'd recommend the Getaway, Breakaway, or Escape then on NCL. Slides, ropes courses, dualing pianos

Froggylein    7 years ago

True cruising is not for everyone. I went first time on luxury cruise line last year and loved it so much and now booked 2 more cruises. You have everything on a ship. I enjoy food, relax and have no time to worry about nothing but smelling fresh ocean air and scenery

Kathy717    7 years ago

Sorry, but not sorry, I'm in that 50-70 range and I DO NOT try to eat as much as possible in those 7 days. I love cruising. I love meeting different people (I now have friends in England, Ireland and Canada). I only went to 2 shows, one of them being the crews show the last day. Cruising is not for everyone, but there are ones (like me) who love that style. I've been to more countries this way than I would have doing regular vacations, and if I like the itinerary of a cruise, I might do it again, like I did the Gem and am doing a repeat on the Dawn. So they must be doing something right as there are many others like me.
