Review summary

First time heading north instead of south. More chance of bad weather so pack accordingly. Average age of passengers was about 50 so events were calmer. Less of a party atmosphere. There was also a lot less shopping opportunities onboard compared to other cruises I've been on. When shopping for watches, there were only a handful of choices instead of the showcases I'm accustomed to. There were no on-deck t-shirt sales on the at sea day. The gift shop looked like it was closing down where most things were on clearance and the shirts were for other cruises in the Caribbean instead on the itinerary I was experiencing.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Smooth and quick. Even with Covid checks, it was easy.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
The specialty dining was excellent. The main dining and buffets were all on the salty side. The noodle bar was uncomfortable since we were all sitting about 4' facing each other from strangers. In this post covid times, this is unacceptable without a barrier. The buffet was unimaginative but the carving board was excellent.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Standard activities but still fun and available.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
The stage shows were excellent. The musicians and other performers were also very good. My biggest complaint was the scheduling. On other cruises, the scheduling was made easier to attend most if not all event with some quick exits or catching on different nights. On this cruise, almost all events took place at the same 7pm slot so you were not able to catch all the performances.

Children's Programs

No children. Did not attend.

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
Most staff were typically above and beyond. Very helpful and friendly. On this cruise, there were many staff members that looked and behaved like they didn't want to be there. Also, there were a few occurrences where I was walking with a plate and drink and staff members would see me and cut in front where I had to stop or run into them and drop my food. On other cruises, the staff was always on the lookout for the passengers, especially around the buffet where passengers would be distracted by the food choices. I'm not expecting the royalty treatment, just common courtesy when I as a fellow passenger would see a person with food and let them go ahead so as not to bump into them.

Ship Quality

Nice layout. Clean

Cabin / Stateroom

Our steward was always a pleasure to converse with and the room was always spotless. No complaints.

Ports of call

New York, New York

Started and ended here.

Newport, Rhode Island

Excursions are a must as the town is small and is restricted to food or shopping. There is nothing nearby that allows you to walk to. Since the ship was not able to dock, the tender situation was ridiculous. We were supposed to get off the ship at 8:00 am, but was not able to get to land until 10.

Portland, Maine

Rainy weather did not allow us to walk around too much. Pretty dock area with shopping and food.

Bar Harbor, Maine

Acadia park was beautiful.

Saint John, New Brunswick

Small Canadian town with a nice back story and history. Pleasant place to visit and see the reversing river.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Took the map and went for a walking tour. Amazing public gardens. Beautiful town with history, scenery and great food. Plenty of shopping and events.
