Review summary

We took the Breakaway cruise the week before Christmas, and had only one bad-weather day (in Cozumel)! Way better than our typical Mississippi Winter weather. We took my Mom--it was the FIRST cruise any of the three of us (hubby, too) had ever taken! Mama's almost 80 and hubby & I are mid-fifties. Only negative was the embarkation/debarkation at NOLA Cruise Port--UGH! I got to snorkel in Belize, but Cozumel snorkeling was canceled, due to weather. The last day, Mama and I toured the Mayan Ruins in Costa Maya--spectacular site/tour & weather, too! Breakaway Haven was great also! Glad we booked our Haven Aft Balcony Suite--it WAS VERY "SWEET"! 😉

Hubby, Mom & I took our 1st cruise ever on the Breakawaycruise the week before Christmas, and had only one bad-weather day (in Cozumel)! All was great except for the embarkation/debarkation at NOLA Cruise Port--UGH! Snorkeled in Belize & toured Ruins in Costa Maya--GREAT! Haven Aft Balcony Suite (11th floor) was AWESOME!

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Great!

The Haven Restaurant

4 out of 5

Good food, courteous staff, clean, elegant setting. However, service was way too slow--sometimes even missed out eating meal, b/c we had to leave for excursion or other scheduled event. Also, since I'm allergic to shrimp/shellfish, my choices were VERY limited, thus I tired of the same food. I finally went to eat in the main Garden Cafe, just to have a greater variety/more food choices!

Teppanyaki

Even though we reserved MONTHS before cruise, our wait was 45 minutes, with NO place to sit! And, I'm allergic to shrimp/shellfish, so they couldn't serve me from the grill! However, they did well in bringing my separate but matching dishes well-timed when others were served from grill. Chef was delightful!

Moderno Churrascaria

Okay. Too dark! Not enough wait staff.

The Haven Lounge

4 out of 5

Nice, although the inside areas WAY TOO small & crowded, especially when we had our luggage awaiting transitions!

O'Sheehan's Neighborhood Bar and Grille

4 out of 5

Very good! Great authentic setting & good food! Need more servers.

La Cucina

5 out of 5

Very GOOD! Nice atmosphere, service, & delicious food! Especially tasty desserts! Best onboard!

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
Regret there wasn't enough Time to see and do all/more inboard!

The Haven Private Sundeck

5 out of 5

Fabulous! Even a bit TOO LARGE--would rather some of the sundeck space had been added to the INTERIOR lounge area!

Guest Services

5 out of 5

In Haven, they were SUPERIOR! Above & beyond expectations!

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Circus Dinner was amazing & Broadway Show was nice.

The Library

2 out of 5

Nice, but ridiculously UNSTAFFED & INaccessible books (locked glass doors on shelves)--preventing us from USING/reading the great selections stocked in there!

The Atrium

4 out of 5

Nice area. Wish it was "attended" by hosts/hostesses all the time, to consult, help, direct, answer questions, etc. It'd be a good CENTRAL place to staff someone for just GENERAL help.

Spiegel Tent

5 out of 5

AWESOME! SPECTACULAR! JAW-DROPPING! BEST entertainment of the cruise! Food was good, but could have been upgraded a bit.

Breakaway Theater

Ship Quality

Very nice! Especially liked the hand-wadhing stations upon entering dining areas!

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Fabulous! Except for Sofa-bed, which was WAY TOO HARD for Mama, even with egg-crate topper! Need "Temperpedic-type" topper EVERY night for those HARD sofa-beds!

Ship tip

Take a YOUR of ship the FIRST day, while at sea! Book excursions & entertainment WAY EARLY before cruise. And, take "happiest" /small gifts for

Ports of call

New Orleans, Louisiana

I live just 3 hours north of New Orleans, so we come here frequently. Visit was fine, embarkation & disembarkation were AWFUL!

Cozumel, Mexico

2 out of 5
Weather was AWFUL! Cold, rainy, windy! Snorkeling canceled...wish we'd had options for "ALTERNATE" excursions, in inclement weather scenarios!

Harvest Caye, Belize

4 out of 5
Excellent village! Clean, scenic, LOTS of vendors & food options! Snorkeling excursion was okay...spent as much time riding boat to site, as we did In the water--not much to see, and spent most of the time fighting waves trying to keep up with Guide! Would rather have Closer to port location, where waters were calmer, we could see more sealife, & we could "drift" snorkel, rather than fighting waves to keep up with a guide! Felt TOO rushed!

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

5 out of 5
MY FAVORITE! Mayan Ruins were AWESOME! Just wish I'd had time to tour Ruins AND village, too...did a little, but not enough time. And wish they'd had little golfcarts/shuttles from Ship to shore, b/c the pier was WAY TOO LONG--especially for those of us w/back problems! !

Disembarkation

2 out of 5
Only a little better than embarkation, but not much! Pretty awful! EXHAUSTING, WAY TOO Long, & NO place to SIT--too hard for back-problem folks & elderly!
