Norwegian Breakaway

7 Night Western Caribbean (New Orleans Roundtrip)

Sail date: November 18, 2018

Ship: Norwegian Breakaway

Cabin type: Inside

Traveled as: Family (young children)

Review summary

The poorest of my seven cruises for reasons noted above. I have sailed on Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and previously on Norwegian. The video game room and associated cost plus the extra pay for shows left a bad taste in my mouth. Staff were unable to correct the associated problems even though they were informed the charges were made by an underage special needs child.

Onboard Activities

Most of these were great but were shut down a large portion of the time due to weather or travel. The biggest disappointment had to do with video games and video rooms. These were open at all hours for all kids. The charge is $2 per video game and they last for minutes. There was little or no supervision. My ten year old child had his card taken by older kids who used it to run up a substantial bill. When he informed the officer, they simply took the card back but did nothing about the charges. There is no max amounts and, if your like me, you assume from past cruises that the charge card can only be used for soda, etc and has a max amount of $50.

Entertainment

2 out of 5
The main shows required additional charges of over 30 per person. I have been on seven cruises and not experienced this. The charged show took up center stage so nothing else was available for family during this time.

Children's Programs

These guys were awesome. My children loved to go to the kids clubs.

This area is beautiful and free beaches make a fun day for the family.

Disembarkation

Pretty simple procedure but there was long lines and people in the back of the ship used the elevators there and then cut in front of people standing in line for 15 minutes.

Thanks for sharing your cruise.

Main show is free. If your child is special needs and under age, put a freeze on spending on their card. That is unfortunate about your kids card being used by others. Not the cruiseline’s fault the card was taken though, they aren’t obligated to do anything since it’s something that is frequently lied about. Also, nobody can help the weather, not sure why you are upset about that.

It's sad to hear you've gone away with such a poor opinion of the Breakaway. Not everyone's cup of tea I suppose. Going on such a large ship has its drawbacks but also has many features not found on smaller ships. The only pay show on the ship is Cirque Dreams which at $12 per person is a bargain for a wonderful show.

What were the "charged" shows in the main theater? There's the Cirque show in the Spiegel Tent that has an upcharge because it includes dinner but I'm not familiar for the main theater charge..... with all due respect, you've cruised enough so if you're like me, you assume that a frequent cruiser will always confirm the card charging policy before handing it to a 10 year old with special needs who you left unattended and unsupervised in a video game room. It's more likely he ran up the charges and because you weren't there to supervise it was super easy to blame the anonymous older kids.

Why wasn't your child's card restricted? Most people wouldn't give any kid free reins with their card
