Norwegian Breakaway

Sail date: November 19, 2017

Ship: Norwegian Breakaway

Traveled as: Family (young children)

Review summary

This cruise was fun only because it was a family vacation for us. I don't think I would want to sail on Norwegian again based on the changes I saw.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Smooth.... no issues at all.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

2 out of 5
Main dining rooms - be prepared to wait for your food. Getting a table was not difficult but waiting for the dinner to arrive was excruciating. Buffet - adequate. We're vegetarians so limited options no matter where we ate. Buffet ended up being our best option and the best way describe the food is cafeteria type - taste and style.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
This was by far the best part about the ship - the waterslides (when they were open), ropes course and rock wall (we saw it open once during the 7 days). We were on a family cruise with 6 adults and 3 kids so spent a lot of time on these activities. The pools are way too small for a ship this huge! always crowded.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Magic show - was good and we all enjoyed. Burn the floor - was fun for the first 20 minutes - then it got boring and not just for the kids. Rock of ages - didn't see it. Perhaps the paid shows were better? We had sailed Norwegian Dawn a few years ago and the shows were amazing.

Children's Programs

None of the 3 kids participated.

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
Service was ok. Not the courteous, friendly service we had come to expect being on other cruises. On our previous Norwegian cruises (Breakaway, Gem and Dawn) - staff used to go above and beyond to accomodate us. Not on this Breakaway trip. Last trip on Breakaway was in 2015 and the service was phenomenal. Every evening we had special veg meals and the staff tried to please every one. On this trip, it felt like they just wanted to do their job and be done with it. We did not have any bad experiences but it definitely was not the same as before.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Ship was clean and well maintained. Pools - small therefore over crowded and same with hot tubs Deck 6,7,8 where the restaurants, theatre etc. are located - Casino is in the hall way space. There isn't a separate room or space for the casino. So, you must walk through the smoke to get to the other end. Deck 8 waterfront area is very nice.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Inside cabin, which for 2 adults and 1 kid was okay. There is not enough closet/storage space. There were 2 bunk beds so I used one bed to lay out all our clothes! Suitcases fit under the bed.

Ports of call

New York, New York Did not visit port

we're from NJ.

Port Canaveral, Florida Did not visit port

Bad weather

Great Stirrup Cay (Cruise Line Private Island), Bahamas

4 out of 5
Nice. I had read about the rocks in the water - it's true! Also, not enough chairs for the crowd.

Nassau, Bahamas

4 out of 5
we did a snorkeling excursion - it was fun and okay for the price.

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
slightly chaotic. They were way behind and lines were extremely long.
