Review summary

This was a memorable experience and it turned out to be better than I expected. I would definitely cruise on the Breakaway again if the opportunity presents itself.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
Embarkation was fine until they had to put a hold on the entire process because the embarkation room was full. We had to wait about 30 minutes until they restarted. Other than that, it was ok.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
My wife and I ate at four of the specialty restaurants and it was definitely worth it. We had the dining package and we were glad we did. My personal favorite was Ocean Blue followed by Le Bistro, Cagney's, and La Cucina. We also ate in all of the main dining rooms and O'Sheehans. The ambiance in Le Bistro was fantastic, just an overall enjoyable experience. I wasn't impressed with La Cucina but being Italian and eating that food all the time, I am perhaps being a bit critical. Not that it was bad, but I expected it to be better. They had gnochhi in a pesto sauce and I asked if they could make it in a Bolognese sauce instead and I was told they didn't know how to make it even though they had another dish on the menu with Bolognese. O'Sheehan's was great for breakfast and lunch and served your typical pub food. One common observation at all the restaurants was the slow service. Once our waiter took our order, he or she would seem to disappear for a long period of time. Most nights, they seemed understaffed. All in all, we didn't have a bad meal but some were better than others.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
Pool: I am surprised at how small the pool was for a ship that size. I had read reviews before I sailed that it was impossible to find a chair by the pool because people reserved chairs very early in the morning. It definitely was difficult but not impossible to find a spot and there were spots available on the other decks. The problem was that it was very windy a couple of days and those decks were closed. On those days, it was impossible to get a spot by the pool. There were so many other activities going on that it was impossible to do everything. If you are bored on this ship, there must be something wrong with you.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Most of the shows were enjoyable; however, I was not impressed with Burn The Floor. This is the show that most people were saying was a "must see" so I actually booked it before we sailed. I guess I should have researched it more. Now remember, this is my opinion and my all of you are going to agree with me on this. I am not a fan of ballroom dancing and that is what this show is about. I loved the music but could do without the dancing. If dancing is your thing, you will love it. It's my fault for not looking into it before hand.I loved Rock of Ages and the Cirque show although I could have done without the dinner at Cirque as it was not that good. They served surf and turf and the meat was terrible. Man from Mars was also very good.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Most staff members were very friendly but we did run into a couple of staff who seemed miserable. The main reason for not giving 5 stars was the slow service.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Very well maintained and clean.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The cabin was fine for two people; however, it would have been a bit crowded if there were more guests in the cabin. There was plenty of storage space for all our clothes. The cabin was very clean with no strange odors, etc. The bathroom was actually not as small as I expected. There was an issue with the toilet not flushing on several occasions but it must have been a problem on that part of the ship and not just the cabin because we saw plumbers working in the hallways a few times.

Ship tip

Have a positive attitude and be willing to change plans at the last minute of needed. Keep an open mind and you will have a fantastic experience.

Ports of call

New York, New York Did not visit port

Royal Naval Dockyard, West End, Bermuda

5 out of 5
We loved Bermuda when we first visited 25 years ago on our honeymoon. It took us 25 years to get back but we finally did and found the experience to be the same as it was back then. The island is one of our favorites places. The people are friendly, it is very clean, the beaches are fantastic, etc. although it is expensive. I would recommend everyone visit Bermuda at least once in their lifetime.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
We lucked out on this one. We chose a 9:30 disembarkation time and realized we should have chosen an earlier time when we saw how long the line was. Once our group was called and we were on line for about 15 minutes, a staff person opened another exit and led a small group of us out. Once we got into the terminal, I got a porter to help us with our bags because a wheel had broken off of one of our pieces and it would have been very difficult to move it. He took us right to the front of the line. I felt a little guilty but, hey, sometimes you have to take advantage of the breaks you get
