Review summary

The Breakaway is a MASSIVE ship with plenty to do and see if you plan well, but it can be a bit overwhelming at times. Keep an eye on the Freestyle Daily and have a plan and you'll do well with your cruise vacation.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
Embarkation was about as easy as I've ever seen, and luggage arrived in a timely manner - especially for such a large ship! It's always a long wait so can't ever be a 5/5.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Le Bistro, Teppanyaki - excellent (5/5) La Cucina - very good (4/5) Main Dining Rooms - very good (4/5) Garden Cafe Buffet Breakfast - Good (3/5) but WAY too crowded. Garden Cafe Buffet Lunch - Good (3/5) but selection was surprisingly limited

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
The Breakaway has many activities but again the crowds make it hard to take advantage of them. Also, it's surprising that many of the activities overlap with others that may be interesting to the same individuals, causing a need to pick one or the other. Game shows and other activities are never more than 1/2 hour (with a few exceptions), and that can leave you wanting more. There are not nearly enough shady areas to sit on deck and even fewer chairs when compared to the number of people on board. There were a few altercations over chair-saving that I saw. Rock wall, ropes course, water slides were thoroughly enjoyed by my 9-year old daughter. Wife and I used the fitness center and it was well stocked with cardio equipment.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Rock of Ages was great fun and well performed! Burn the Floor was simply OUTSTANDING. Magician was fun, and Second City was a riot! A favorite was the Howl at the Moon Saloon Dueling pianos. It was great fun and the performers gave 100% even when their voices were strained. My main issue is that there was not a traditional revue show every night like on previous cruises I'd been on, and there was no stand-up comedian. There were 3 of 7 nights when I did not get to see a show because there was Rock of Ages or Burn the Floor only available those nights, and I saw them other nights. I know sometimes the revue shows are cheesy but at least they're entertaining!

Children's Programs

5 out of 5
My daughter LOVED LOVED LOVED the Splash Academy and we were very grateful for its existence. They did an outstanding job and if I could give them 6 stars I would!

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
One evening we arrived at our room to see it propped open by our room steward and not locked after he left. That was a MAJOR problem. It was often hard to find a staff member to assist in areas that did not have an up-charge, but when you paid extra for something the service was excellent. Dining room service was kind of slow. Room service was spot on for breakfast when we had early excursions.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
The ship was beautiful and the common areas are clean and well-maintained.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Comfortable for a family of 3, but would not be for 4. A bit too close to thumping club music at times.

Ship tip

Be prepared for long lines and huge crowds. If this isn't for you, another ship may be a better choice for you. Be sure to reserve shows and specialty restaurants in advance to get what you want.

Ports of call

New York, New York Did not visit port

Only to board and disembark

Royal Naval Dockyard, West End, Bermuda

5 out of 5
We love Bermuda and the area around the dockyard is very nice. We took a mini-bus tour that was very comprehensive but there was not enough off-bus time to explore. Snorkel Park in the dockyard was great - I saw an octopus underwater for the first time in 8 times snorkeling!

Disembarkation

2 out of 5
Delays and incredibly long line that wound through the smelly casino made this a poor experience. Luggage was in the right place at the right time though, and staff tried to make it easier.

The daily newsletter is a great way to plan your day according to what YOU want to do. I bring a pink and a blue highlighter so we know each others activities. Every once in a while, we both select the same activity (lol).
