Overall we had a fantastic week on an amazing ship! The entertainment was excellent, many activities, and dining options, and Bermuda is a beautiful place to explore.
Embarkation
4 out of 5
Easy embarkation in New York. This was our second Norwegian cruise from NY, and still felt a little hesitant to let our bags go, however they were at our cabin albeit a little worse for wear with a cracked handle.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
3 out of 5
We ate at the buffet for most meals and had dinner in the complimentary dining rooms. The buffet staff work hard to always have some good options there. The Taste and Savor dining rooms were smaller and less active than the Manhattan, and surprisingly the service was also slower although everyone was friendly. Manhattan was our favorite and the service was impeccable, especially by I Wayan, our waiter on one night. The food never really was outstanding except for a dessert or 2. This includes the additional $ paid for the Cirque dinner and Wine Tasting Comedy lunch, although slightly better. The specialty restaurants were a bit of a chore and expense.
Onboard Activities
3 out of 5
Lots of activities however impossible to get a chair on the pool deck, sun or shade. Most chairs were held by towels, and not occupied which was very frustrating. There should be a better way to control this. The fitness center has a good amount of equipment however still difficult to get a treadmill. Enjoyed one of the movies, the ropes course and mini golf, and dancing.
Entertainment
5 out of 5
The entertainment was the best that I had seen on any cruise ship. Our favorite were the Burn the Floor dancers, also performing in the Manhattan dining room. The musicians were excellent, Charlie and his band in the blues club, the dueling piano guys, and dj. Cirque du Soleil and Rock of Ages were fun, and the magician and his wife, Justino and Daniela were very entertaining. Second City was our least favorite with improv, and better with the game show.
Service and Staff
4 out of 5
I wayan in the Manhattan dining room was excellent and our room steward, Alexander was friendly and helpful. They were the standouts, however everyone was kind and friendly as well.
Ship Quality
5 out of 5
The Breakaway is a beautiful massive ship that is easy to get around. The ship staff work tirelessly to keep it clean and well maintained. It would be great to have a deck that goes completely around the ship as it is impossible to walk or run on the jogging track.
Cabin / Stateroom
3 out of 5
The balcony was tight with 2 chairs and a small table , however nice to get away from everyone there. The room itself was poorly laid out with the bed right next to the closet making it a little awkward to get to. The room could use a little more storage however it is a huge ship and space is maximized. The bathroom is a good size.
Ship tip
Book reservations for everything as early as possible.
It was easy to get a cab to the Manhattan port. It will save some time and money to get off at 12th Ave & 48th St instead of driving into the entrance on 55th st. The attendants will take your luggage on 48th St. New York is a great place to explore.
The Royal Nav Dockyard has interesting buildings and shops including the Rum Cake and Glassworks. We did the Trail Bike Hike and Beach excursion in Somerset and which was fun. The bike trail and hike were the highlight while the beach was a half hour rest before getting back to the ship. The other excursion was the Horseshoe Bay Beach Transfer which was very easy to see this beautiful beach on our last day in Bermuda. We also took a ferry to Hamilton on our own to explore and took a bus to the Crystal Caves, a must see. Bermudian people were friendly and helpful too!
We disembarked with our luggage and this is the first time we were not able to just walk off of a ship. We got off of the elevator to a crowd that wrapped around most of the ship which took an hour to get through. Then another thirty minutes to get through customs. The colors were called much earlier than the times on our tags. We were ready to leave according to the tags and so were many others.
