Review summary

I have to give NCL credit for their quick, efficient, and comprehensive response to our problem.  On the second night upon returning to our cabin, we found bed bugs in our bed.  A pest control expert and a guest services supervisor appeared at our door within 5 minutes.  They quickly confirmed the problem, inspected the essentials (change of clothes, items from the safe, and toiletries) we wanted to take with us, got us new key cards, and had a porter take us to an equivalent cabin.  NCL arranged to have everything remaining in our room inspected and laundered by 1:00pm the next day. They did a beautiful job, even undershirts came back ironed on hangers.  NCL provided acceptable compensation for our inconvenience, including free access to iConcierge, so that we could keep in contact with our children and grandchildren.  Unfortunately, we were not able to return to our original cabin, even though they thought we might be able to do so in 2-3 days.  Overall, NCL made the best they could of our problem.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Food was the best we have had on NCL. LeBistro exceeded our expectations.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Kids loved the water slides and ropes course. TV and hallway reservations and information worked very well on this trip. iConcierge worked OK for texts, but never got the phone portion to work - also, occasionally dropped WiFi, so we had to keep checking to make sure we had connectivity. NCL shouldn't charge $7.95 per device unless it works great and has full functionality. It is missing a schedule of your reserved activities - this is a very important, but missing feature.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Enjoyed the dueling pianos - made even better by a very enthusiastic audience. Fire and Ice singer was fantastic - but deserved a better venue than the atrium (we miss the large cocktail lounges.

Children's Programs

5 year-old grandchildren thoroughly enjoyed the kids programs. Pagers worked great when grandchildren needed their parents.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Staff was super friendly and helpful. Not as many servers walking the decks as a few years ago.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Overall we like the ship; however, they have the smoking area on deck on the side where the hot tubs for children and the children's splash pool are located - A VERY BAD DESIGN - the kids had to breath in smoke that was not contained.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
See general comment about bed bugs in first cabin. Good size shower. Some balconies are much smaller than others - do your research!

Ports of call

New York, New York

5 out of 5
Lots of options for getting to/from boat - Yankee Trails Cruise Express from upstate NY or combination of Amtrak or Megabus an UBER or walking.

Port Canaveral, Florida

1 out of 5
Stay on the boat, unless you want to see the rockets nearby.

Great Stirrup Cay (Cruise Line Private Island), Bahamas

5 out of 5
Reserve a clamshell (or a cabana if available) and get there early to get the best location.

Nassau, Bahamas

5 out of 5
Good stop - we went to a private resort on a day pass - the public transportation (a few blocks from the cruise port) worked extremely well for 1.25 (US $ or Bahamian $) a ride.

I've been so many cruises and have never experienced something like this. Now I'm bringing family and friends along with us and I'm so embarrassed but I might have to warn them about this...

Yes please. We are going in February and I never heard of a bed bug incident on a cruise ship before!

This is a bit worrisome with a cruise looming on the horizon, if you don't mind sharing, which cabin were you originally booked?
