enjoyable first time cruise on Holland America. Nice staff, great décor. A little disappointed in holiday decorations for Christmas week cruise.
Embarkation

wish there were more greeters as soon as you got on ship to give you the daily itinerary. Quick check in process at port.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
4 out of 5
Main dining was good. Wish I knew the buffets were not self-serve that you were served by staff, took too long to get food so didn't eat a lot at buffet
Piano Bar
5 out of 5
great place to hang out and enjoy music, just wish they did not play the same tunes multiple days
Onboard Activities
4 out of 5
enjoyed the martini tastings offered each night. Participated in Christmas Day drink tasting which was extremely busy and was in a smaller bar due to unexpected participation, so it was a little cramped but still fun
Entertainment
3 out of 5
didn't overly enjoy the stage shows when we could make the performances due to late seating dinner.
Children's Programs
no children
Service and Staff
4 out of 5
most staff was friendly. did not particularly enjoy our room steward as he put the wrong luggage in our room and day of debarkation he started to strip the room while we were waiting for early release.
Ship Quality
5 out of 5
enjoyed the layout and design of ship. although it had just done a small dry dock, you could still smell the new carpet on the first couple of days
Loved having directional carpet to let you know where front of ship was. helpful to get back to your cabin
Cabin / Stateroom
4 out of 5
enjoyed having a couch to sit at even though room was small. not much of a view due to tender ships in way
Ship tip
if you can purchase the cabana on the retreat deck, it is a nice way to relax and not stress over getting a deck chair to enjoy the weather.
We. have never been to the buffet on the Nieuw Amsterdam where there were not self-serve options. We enjoy meals where the roast is fresh cut according to our preference, though. It's worth the wait.
