Review summary

So disappointing, don't know if I'll ever cruise with HAL again. Know I'll never board Koningsdam or cruise from San Diego again. 17 cruises and this was the most stressing and non-relaxing time. Embarking and disembarking took several days to calm down from. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this ship or port of embarkation. They really need to up their game.

Embarkation

1 out of 5
No one seemed to know what was happening. Was it HAL or port San Diego? THE worse experience I've had in 17 cruises.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

2 out of 5
Main Dining quality was poor. Lido was good. Pinnacle was excellent

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Main stage was god, rather repetitive though. Rock&Roll and Rock&Roll and BB King were excellent

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Staff was excellent, but they were understaffed. A sold out cruise and they didn't fully staff for it??

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Loved the ship, very clean, but understaffed

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
We were impressed by the cabin and balcony. A little short on drawers, poor design, not very deep.

Ship tip

Was really looking for a forever cruiseline.

Ports of call

San Diego, California

4 out of 5
Ensenada was a bust. Arrived at dark and to few hours to be there. Decided not to leave the ship. All other ports were great, except for tendering.

Catalina Island, California

5 out of 5
Loved the port, hated being tendered. On our own

Santa Barbara, California

5 out of 5
Nice port, hated being tendered. On our own

San Francisco, California

5 out of 5
Great port. Pier located within walking distance for almost everything. Did an excursion to Alcatraz and spent the rest of the time walking everywhere.

Ensenada, Mexico

1 out of 5
Arrived after dark (hated that), was there a short time. Wasn't worth the effort of leaving the ship.

Disembarkation

1 out of 5
Was not smooth and leisurely. The staff didn't seem to know what was happening, got different answers from each one on what was happening. Didn't seem to have any communication. Once again the worse experience I have had on 17 cruises.

We had same experience on February 22 cruise to Hawaii. Mdr food was bordering on awful, trying to make it seem fancy and gourmet but would be better if they just did good food and not worry about pretend gourmet.

We took that ship out of San Diego a year ago and everything went very well. That’s the third time we were in that port and always have a great experience. Maybe your bad experience was an aberration.

This was a bucketlist cruise for the wife. We were so disappointed in the boarding process and then the disembarkation. We did our best to enjoy the cruise. We loved the ports, except Encenada. Just a late port and not long in port. Ship was beautiful. For a sold out cruise to depart so understaffed was a true disappointment. Don't know if it wS the fault of HAL or the Port of San Diego for the poor embarking and disembarking. It has soured me on the Port and on HAL. Guess we're still looking for OUR cruiseline.

Sorry this cruise didn’t meet your expectations.

People need to understand why a foreign flagged ship stop’s at a foreign port on a all US itinerary
