Review summary

My favorite part of the cruise was going to the Islands, the Billboard piano players Sarah and Will and most of the shows.  I didn't like, my cabin location, the food, the embarkation where you were boarded by your number and sat and waited and I felt like I was living in a nursing home for 11 days!  I expected much more going on in the evening then the same two B B King and Billboard for 11 nights, early closures of lounges and eating places and I don't go in a smoke filled Casino, which was really disappointing.  This was my first Holland America Cruise as I'm a Celebrity Cruiser and I don't plan on taking Holland America again.  Very disappointed.  It would be great if I was in my 80's and 90's!  Good for those folks to be able to enjoy.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
I didn't care for the food. Buffet didn't change and dining room entrees, many, not to my taste.

Onboard Activities

1 out of 5
no where near enough activities or interesting choices.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
I enjoyed all the shows except the first night juggler.

Service and Staff

Excellent except in the gym.

Cabin / Stateroom

Cute, very small, had a place for everything, I have many black and blue marks from knocking into the little table as there was no walking room. I did a double inside guarantee and ended up with a single. What I hated most - every time we pulled into a port at 6:00 am or so it sounded like planes landing for an hour and after I guess we were closer the engines roared for another 30 minutes or so. I go to bed at 2:00 am, so getting up at 6:00 or before was not my idea of a restful, catching up on sleep vacation. It was disgusting. I also heard the waves (I guess that's what it was) smacking against my cabin. I have never had a location like that. When I do guarantee inside on Celebrity, I am on 9, last time 10 and center of the ship. In order to brush my teeth or wash when we had a lot of movement, I had to brace my legs and hold on to something with one hand. This cruise was nothing that I thought it would be and I was very disappointed.

Ship tip

If you are in your 80's or 90's this is great for you!

Anyone on the Koningsdam on Deck 4 encounter smoke odor in the halls or staterooms? I'm very concerned as I am highly allergic to cigarette smoke and I've been informed by ships service that the crew have a state room on deck 4 where they can go and drink and smoke.

I am not in my 80s or 90s but I love the service and entertainment on HAL.‚  I like the variety of itineraries.‚  Try a Grand cruise for a high level of service.‚  I, too, am a fan of Celebrity. Sorry that this cruise was not up to your expectations.
