Great itinerary, on board experience could have been a lot better.

Island Princess

10 Night Panama Canal With Costa Rica & Caribbean (Ft. Lauderdale Roundtrip)

Sail date: October 11, 2018

Ship: Island Princess

Traveled as: Couple

Review summary

There should be an adults-only area on the ship. They let kids into the Lotus Pool area, where they run around yelling and getting in the hot tubs. Nowhere for adults to go and just relax other than their cabin.

Food and Dining

Specialty restaurants pretty good. Main dining room, the food was ok to good, but the service very poor. Had to ask the Head Waiter to get escargot on a second night, other cruises we just asked our waiter. Also, they would serve food and then take several minutes to bring condiments, salsa, etc. My wife had an Irish Coffee from the dessert menu one night, it showed up about 10 minutes after the rest of the table was served their dessert. Things like this at every meal. Waited almost 30 minutes for a glass of wine at the Crooner's Bar because the bartender was 'busy' talking to a guest about nothing. He only made one drink in 30 minutes. When we complained, he lied about doing paperwork. We watched him the entire time, he wasn't doing anything. We spoke with many other guests that were equally disappointed with the dining room service, including one man that this was his 34th Princess cruise and he said it was the worst he had ever experienced. It seemed the staff just didn't care about doing a proper job.

Onboard Activities

Not much going on on sea days. A couple of wine tastings, but beyond that, just bingo and a few other boring things.

Entertainment

2 out of 5
The cruise director was awful. One night while we were in the Explorer's Lounge they were playing Country Western, and the place was packed, People dancing, singing along, having drinks. Everyone was having a great time. Then he came in, ended the music to play a stupid horse racing game out with cardboard horses and dice. The place was empty in less than 5 minutes.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Our room steward was excellent. If the rest of the waiters were half as good as he was it would have been a great cruise.

You can pay a daily fee for Sanctuary. Well worth it if you desire reserved lounger, quiet, and great service.

I’m not sure when you travelled but I’ve just returned from this ship and there was around 20 kids max onboard. Other than our own teenage daughter and one other teen I never saw any other children using the Lotus pool. The weather was fantastic and most of the younger kids appeared later in the day in the main pool presumably after they had been to the kids’ club. The Sanctuary is adults only and was far enough away from the lido deck to avoid kids. There was also the splash pool area above the Horizon dining room which seemed a very tranquil area and too shallow to be of interest to most kids. Perhaps you weren’t aware of those areas?

Isnt the Sanctuary adults only?

Agreed. Only excellent thing I recall was our room steward. Dining experience in all the venues was the most disappointing. Would not book this ship again.

Totally agree, thanks for the info. Btw, did you mention this on your post cruise review? Thanks again.
