Review summary

Very disappointed in this cruise. If I thought I’d get it I’d request a refund or at least a partial refund. This was not the Royal experience I’ve had in the past.

Food and Dining

I went on the Wonder of the Seas in April and had the most amazing time but the 3 day cruise on the Independence of The Seas was a completely different story. I just returned from a short 3 day cruise on Independence of The Seas and it was by far the worst cruise experience I’ve ever had. I’ve been on property 8+ RCL cruises (Emerald Status) and 4-5 other cruise (various companies), this was the WORST. There was a complete lack of entertainment. Almost no bands playing music daily/ nightly. The food is as horrible. The lunch in the Windjammer daily was chicken fingers, hotdogs, hamburgers, Indian food, and a sale bar. Every day for 3 day, no variety. The dining room left much to be desired. Couldn’t get a table for a party of 8. When we did get our table service all three nights was slowwww and the service progressively got worse each night. To the point we waited 30 minutes after being seated for waters and bread. After sitting for almost 45 minutes my sons and nieces (3 year olds) milks were finally brought to the table. One night my wine was as never even delivered. The dining food was almost inedible, my wife’s chicken dish was hard to cut with a steak knife. The New York strip literally looks like a Salisbury steak, and way over cooked. Several other cruisers complained about the food and service as well. The food at CocoKay was better then the food on the boat. Lunch at their private island was as about the only meal I enjoyed that didn’t cost me extra money. (I was told RCL has a different food and beverage company for the private island. If this is the case please use them for the boat as well.) The wings at playmakers grill were great but for what I paid for the cruise the included food should be just as good. It seemed as though they were short staffed everywhere on this ship and the workers were being over worked. Not sure if this is due to Covid or what the issues are but it will be a very long time before I cruise with RCL again. This was an awful experience for a family.

Onboard Activities

Pools were decent, didn’t feel over crowded.

Entertainment

Minimum live music. Shows were the same as always.

Service and Staff

Dining room service was the worse we’ve ever received. If I thought we could get better food elsewhere I would have left the restaurant after waiting over half and hour for water and bread. I wasn’t putting much faith in the windjammer after they served the same food daily for lunch. No variation what so ever.

Ship Quality

Ship appeared clean and well Maintained.

Cabin / Stateroom

Was not suitable for a child. The third fold down bead was only accessible to children 6 and over. My son is 3 (almost 4) and the provided us with a pack and play. He hasn’t slep in a crib / pack in play on over a year. We had to argue with customer service to get a rollaway bed brought to the room. Mind you that blocked our door for the connecting room with our family. The room pictured showed a couch in the room. A couch is not in connecting rooms. (This should have been know by the travel agent)

Ship tip

Don’t sail on this ship unless you’re looking for a Carnival experience. It is extremely understaffed and lacking entertainment. I feel bad for the current crew. They are obviously being over worked.

Ports of call

Nassau, Bahamas

Clean and felt safe. Little to do for kids beside the beach and a pirate museum.

Perfect Day At Coco Cay, Bahamas

Royal Caribbean has done a great job with their private island. The food on the island is better than the food on the boat. I was told the food service contract for the island is different than the boat, which explains a lot.

Disembarkation

Long line to get off the boat stretching through the dining areas. Seemed like the just used barriers again due to lack of crew.
