Review summary

For me, this is a one time cruise. I wanted to experience the Icon. Although it was a great experience, I will not book on this ship again. There were too many children, as I should have expected. And, as this was just before they were going back to school, I will not plan a cruise at this time of the year again.

Embarkation

Check-in for the Icon, with so many other cruisers, was remarkably well organized.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
MyTime dining seating was chaotic. Walking around looking for the table happened every time. Food was good. Hooked restaurant was great. Giovanni's was great. Izumi food was good but I was seated at the sushi bar and waiters were leaning over me to pick up their sushi orders. Not favorable. Chopped was fabulous. I do not like buffets so I did not eat there.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
The adult only pool was great. The pool where aqua aerobics were held was too small - not enough space to work out. The fitness center was great.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
The shows I saw were all done very well. Wizard of Oz was great except that the person that was operating the mechanical dog was a distraction. A different implementation for the dog needs to be designed, perhaps something that is controlled off-stage.

Children's Programs

No children in party.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
All service staff were great. Room steward, Ross, always had my room made up early. All waiters were very attentive.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
For as big as Icon is, the layout was great. No trouble navigating floors with the new elevator design. Signage was well done and made it easy to find locations.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
This cabin had 20% obstruction on the balcony. Although this was a regular balcony configuration, I was not able to use it due to the children in the rooms on either side of mine. Disappointing. Bed was comfortable, lots of storage, shower was very large but bathroom could only accommodate a single person at a time. Since I was solo this did not impact me but there were others onboard that it did.

Ship tip

Make your reservations for the shows and specialty restaurants as soon as you get on the ship or earlier if able to do so. They book up quickly. Also, you can only reserve a show one time and if you miss that time, you must stand by for a later time.

Ports of call

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

I took an excursion to kayak and snorkel. Driver talked about the island on our trip to the kayak location which was great. Kayak was fun, very physical. Snorkeling was not as well organized as the kayak portion but the beach was nice.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

5 out of 5
Took an excursion to Drake's Seat, Magens Bay and Skyride. Drake's Seat was just okay, stopping on top of the hill to look over the bay. Magens Bay was beautiful, clear water, large beach area. We spent 2 hours there. The skyride was nice.

Perfect Day At Coco Cay, Bahamas

5 out of 5
I went to Hideaway Beach, adult only area. Made friends on the cruise who booked a cabana which was really nice. Pool bar was great.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Disembarkation was very well organized. I took the self-assist option and took my bags off. I purchased the cruise terminal to airport transport offered by RCCL. It worked great.
