Review summary

My favorite part of the cruise was being back on the ocean again.

This was our forth cruise on the Freedom from Port Canaveral, FL. It was a bit sad to see the ship in such poor condition. Most of the carpeting, furniture and bedding are in need of replacement.  The cigarette smoke was throughout the ship. Nightclubs have turned into specialty resturants.  There is little you can do on the ship that won't cost you extra money.  The food quality was severly below par for Royal Caribbean.  Plus, services are more limited as they have reduced staff.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Bed probably should have been replaced long ago. Our stateroom was very clean but the chipped paint, moldy shower curtain, ill functioning toliet and smell of sulfur or sewage in the bathroom didn't add to our enjoyment. The TV played the same 4 sitcoms all week with an occasional movie and CNN.

Ports of call

Cococay (Cruise Line's Private Island)

3 out of 5
This is the second or third time the ship has not stopped at Coco Cay. Could be a cost saving opportunity for Royal Caribbean.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

The new dock area is very inconvenient for passengers and requires a taxi ride to go anywhere.

bal..it was on the buffet in the Windjammer. It was really good. I love being able to go thru the buffet and try foods you would never order in a restaurant. And no extra charges!

I was on this ship a week later and did not see the maintenance and upkeep problems mentioned in this review.  I thought just the opposite.  My first sailing on Freedom OTS was 8 years ago and I was pleased to see she is being well maintained.

Our bed was firm, just how we like it.  My cabin had no maintenance or cleaning issues.  Years ago I was a hotel manager, so I can't help but look at customer service issues involving personnel, cleanliness, and maintenance.  The staff of Freedom are doing a great job from what I could see.

We are on Freedom of the Seas and the ship is amazing. You are right it is an older ship BUT well maintained. Our room is great and the mattress and pillows are GREAT! We have spent no extra money and we have had steak, salmon, ox tail stew, leg of lamb, prime rib, sushi, pork loin and Jamaican food...
